Oxford v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 11:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 wickets

Match report Amersham beat league leaders to shake up HCPCL Division 2.

2nd and 3rd teams top their tables despite not winning at the weekend.

Even though Amersham had won their last seven games the gap to leaders Oxford had stubbornly refused to narrow over recent weeks. This changed dramatically on Saturday when 3rd place Amersham made it 8 wins in a row, winning by 6 wickets at Oxford.

Forced to make 2 changes due to the in-form Viney brothers being on holiday stand-in skipper Luke Jackson was keen to win the toss and protect his weakened batting line-up. This didn't go to plan but surprisingly Oxford captain John Barrett decided to bat first on a freshly prepared pitch. Opening bowlers Maduka Liyanapathiranage and Alex Lines immediately took the opportunity to shape the game with Oxford at one stage being reduced to 19 for 7 including losing three wickets in an over on 16 to Alex Lines. Harry Stephens (42*) did lead a fightback, supported by Mark Beer (18), but when Beer fell an over before lunch Amersham knew they were firmly in control. Liyanapathiranage needed only 8 balls after lunch to take the final two wickets, finishing with figures of 7 for 31 from 16.2 overs. He was well supported by Lines (3 for 23 from 12) who was unlucky not to take more wickets.

In reply Amersham knew they simply had to avoid losing early wickets to Samad Fallah, the leading wicket taker in the league this year. Led by Bruce Friedrichs (34*) they managed to do this and they reached the target in the 20th over, losing 4 wickets. The victory means that Amersham move into the promotion places, only 2 points behind new leaders Horspath. With 4 games remaining and the format reverting back to limited overs it appears promotion will be between these two teams and Oxford who lie a further 5 points behind.

Amersham play local rivals 9th placed Gerrards Cross this weekend and will have an almost full squad to pick from with only influential all-rounder Rich Stephenson being unavailable.

With 4 games to go an exciting end to the season is in prospect with 3 teams now firmly in contention for promotion and a real chance of these teams all playing at a higher standard of cricket next year.
