Amersham CC Saturday 1st X1 v Tanzanian Cricket Association on Mon 25 Aug 2008 at 13:00
Amersham CC Lost by 79 runs
Match report
On what one would hope would have been a blazing hot August Bank holiday Monday, Amersham hosted its first ever one day international in what was scheduled to be a 50 over match, but was reduced to 45 per side as there was concern as to the light at the close of the second innings.
The weekend had brought heavy rain in the early hours of Sunday morning, which had run across the designated pitch and necessitated hours of rolling to squeeze out the water (thanks Harry Heslop) and re-cutting the outfield to remove all of the wormcasts (thanks Nick Piper).
As a result the track was a little two-paced with one end dry and the other damp
and the conditions overcast for the majority of the day.
Tanzania batted first and Amersham's bowling attack did a very good job to restrict the opposition to 190, just failing to take the last wicket and as you will see from the bowling figures, noone was sent around the park even in the final few overs of the Tanzanian innings - we dared hope that Amersham might record an historic win.
Short lived unfortunately was this hope, as the Tamzanian bowling attack was somewhat more ferocious than their batting one and Amersham were strangled a little as wickets fell at regular intervals, the majority to the bowling, but some to injudicious stroke play.
Amersham finished their innings in the only sunshine of the whole day, with all 10 wickets down and 79 runs short of their target.
The day was closed off with an excellent meal sponsored by Spice & Herbs, which in common with the lunch & tea was demolished by the visitors in very short order.
The Tanzanians then presented the Club with some memorabilia and an invitation to play them on their home territory any time that we were passing! We reciprocated with some Club ties and our best wishes and good luck for their upcoming World Cricket league competition in October.
They paid us the compliment that we had prepared the best playing surfaces and hospitality of the whole of their tour in the UK.
An interesting day for Amersham CC and again a lesson in application for our batsmen.
