Gerrards Cross v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 12 Sep 2009 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Won the Bucks Cup by 3 wickets (2 balls left)

Match report Your author arrived at Wycombe 1/2 an hour late, having spent 2 hours on the A40 between Hanger Lane and Denham and suffering whiplash courtesy of some daft bint who was on her mobile and ran into the back of my car at about 20 MPH.

The first episode therefore that I witnessed was the collapse of Matt McKay in the middle of the pitch having torn his hamstring - not an auspicious start - what else would the day bring? At this point it appeared that GX had got off to a bit of a flyer, but Matt had induced Pegler to nick one behind to Rob. Luke bowled the remaining 3 balls of the over to allow Andy to partner up the extremely economical Stuart.

Things were still ticking along at around 6 an over up until a 100 or so were on the board and GX looked quite comfortable. Stuart came to the end of his spell and Andy was joined by Abhay and gradually the GX defences were broken down as they continued to post a big score, but were now steadily losing wickets.

Entering the fray, came David who was harshly treated by the GX batsmen in his first spell, so Amersham turned to the occasional off-spin of Elliot, who was delighted to dismiss the dangerous Hales with one through the gate (no doubt much to Alex's amusement later), followed by Westaway and finally tempting Webster to come forward once too many times with Rob tidying nicely behind the stumps.

The tail end now exposed it was left to Atko again to administer the final rites.

So GX has exceeded the authors guess of the total by 5, but fallen around 30 short of what could have been an impossible chase.

Mention must of course go to Monty, who jumped in immediately that Matt was carried off to fill the 12th man role for about 35 overs, unable to bowl of course, but planning the trip to KFC in his spare time.

So, to the chase: GX looking confident, Amersham down to 10 possibly, with Matt (& Atko probably) hoping to be spared the batting challenge.

Oh no! not again, Elliot gone for 0 (LBW), enter Chris Owen, exit Chris Owen - not an ignominious defeat after such a build up, surely we could do better, time for Haddock batter.

That's better, Olly & Rob build a good partnership and get us close to the run rate again, no big risks, not too much aerial, looking good.

But they both go down in close succession, so it's Luke & Andy at the crease and up goes the run rate, but down go both wickets (Matt's now gingerly limbering up - author offers to sput a stake in the pitch and lash him to it if necessary)

Hugh's in with Abhay, but no, Abhay is run out - we've got Stuart, Atko & Matt left in the hutch, the score is 162 and we're 7 down, with an asking rate of over 8 per over.

GX smile a bit more and the field tightens, but still maintains 5 boundary riders.

Pocket calculators are warming up as Stuart and Hugh calmly continue to amass the runs at the required rate.............Oh No! a skier goes to the boundary - the safe hands of Gary Hales wait calmly underneath and he drops the ashes, sorry, it!

So, its 19 required and two overs to go, money on GX by most.

Nerves very stretched, 7 required off the final over - do the batsmen realsed that as we bowled them out, 252 will do, who knows?

Stuart aministers the coup de grace on ball 4 with 2 required , a lofted drive over extra cover and it's all over. GX go quieter, author goes to the bar, Cliff Pocock goes for his cheque book, Monty goes to KFC and the crowd go ballistic.

Last partnership yields 92 runs with Stuart 44* facing 35 balls and Hugh 47* facing 44 - perfectly paced of course and Atko breathes again.

Well, what a day, what a year, what a match - having endured the 2nd's promotion chase at Chesham the previous week the Amersham supporters Club are off to the cardiac clinic for the winter.

MOTM - Amersham

TFC - GX

See you all next season.
