Bath secure narrow win in final
By Ivo Tennant

BOURNEMOUTH (Bath won toss): Bath beat Amersham by one run
A RECORD total of 1,612 clubs entered the Portman Under-15 National Championships this year. The final was indicative of the excellence in the field that exists at this age level, Bath holding two fine catches, by Ed Cook and Alex Howorth, in their triumph over Amersham by one run — the same margin of victory as in their semi-final.

Bath made 90 for eight, Jack Kilgannon taking three wickets in the fifteenth and last over of the innings. He was aided by some neat wicketkeeping by Elliot Ketteringham. This was a relatively low total but, even so, Amersham required eight off the last over, which they could not quite achieve.

Bath’s semi-final victory was over Lullington Park, of Derbyshire, James Austwick making 31. In the other semi-final, Amersham defeated Kibworth, of Leicestershire, by 19 runs. Alex Hales made an unbeaten 65 and took three wickets for ten runs. All the matches were reduced in overs because of rain.

The tournament was initiated in 1977 by the Lord’s Taverners. Among several notable performances since then has been a double-century by Andrew Flintoff in 1993.
