Scorecard

AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Reading 2nd on Sat 20 Aug 2005 at 12:30pm
AMERSHAM CC Won 3 Wkts

Match report Amersham secured another win by using their get out of jail free card. Amersham won the toss and elected to bowl first. They got off to a great start with Duncan Ward taking a wicket with the 4th ball of the game. Reading then responded with M Ali and C Peters adding 30 before Ward struck again to remove Peters for 30.
Ali was then joined by the hard hitting M Huggins who was determined to to smash the ball as hard and as far as he could. A change of bowling saw Dave Atkinson take a wicket in his first over. Reading were now 76 for 3 off 19 overs. Atkinson struck again in his next over and again in his 3rd over as Reading collapsed to 92 for 5. Nick Moore then made it 93 - 6 but the danger man Huggins was still at the crease. He was joined by Hartley and they added 24 before Hartley became Atkinson's 4th wicket and Nick Moore bowled Huggins in the next over to make it 119 - 8. Reading's tail enders were not going to be removed without a struggle and the last two wickets added 45 runs. Dave Atkinson was the pick of the Amersham bowlers and ended up taking 5 - 22.

Amersham were set a target of 165 to win but knew it was going to be difficult with Dave Hartley bowling his leg breaks. Amersham were soon 4 - 1 as Hartley bowled Rich Stephenson (the first of his seven wickets) Hartley and Nassim were keeping Amersham on the back foot with a display of accurate spin bowling. Amersham were reduced to 22 - 2 when Chris Owen was LBW and Rob Viney was joined by Andy Robertson. Viney (30) was the third wicket to fall when he tried to hit Hartley over the top once too often. Ollie Haddock and Paul Weston soon followed as Amersham were 74 - 5.

Robertson was joined by Duncan Ward and both players were determined to to play cautiously to make sure Amersham didn't collapse further. With the score on 89 Hartley struck again by bowling Robertson. Atkinson joined Ward and the pair put on 9 before Atkinson became Hartley's 6th victim. Amersham were struggling at 98 - 7 when Brad Holt joined Ward in the hope that Amersham could get close to the target and pick up valuable points in their push for promotion.

Reading decided to take Nassim off and take the new ball as they sensed victory. Hartley was still going strong from one end but the seamers couldn't quite find the right areas and Ward and Holt started to pick off the 57 runs needed for victory. Ward took ten off one over and was being well supported by Holt. Holt then found himself facing the Reading opening bowler who decided the best way to win was to bounce the Amersham players out. Holt hooked one from Ali for 4 and the confidence grew. Amersham had now got to 124 - 7 with 19 overs left. If these two could stay in their was the possibility that Amersham could win. Holt then found himself facing Hartley and struck him for 3 fours as they took 15 off the over. Amersham were 139 - 7 and getting closer. Holt again found himself on strike the next over after Ward had hit one for 3. Ali was still trying to bounce Holt and Holt kept chopping him over the slips to a vacant third man for four 4's. Amersham were within striking distance at 159 - 7. Ward promptly finished off the job in the next over as he hit Hartley for two 4's to win the game.
