Match report The Centenary Match

Although I was doing National Service at the time, the Amersham selectors kindly included me in the team to play an Ian Peebles XI to celebrate the Club’s centenary in 1956.

The picture of the two teams is a valuable record of that great game in July 1956 which ended in a tie! There was good weather and a fair sized crowd with the cars two or three deep on the chestnut tree boundary. Ian Carvalho organised an excellent lunch beforehand in a marquee attached to the side of the pavilion with only calor gas for lighting (and heating in those days too).

Douglas Jardine was an umpire and I recall sitting next to his rather grand young daughter at lunch. To make conversation I asked her where she lived – “Hertfordshire” was her only reply. After some investigation I discovered that she shared a flat opposite Garston Bus Garage on the outskirts of Watford! I batted well down the order as usual but had the pleasure of hitting three sixes, all off Vivian Jenkins, who was of course better known as a rugby player than a cricketer. When I got down to Douglas Jardine’s end he paid me a very rare compliment (for my cricket that is!) of saying “I see they have kept the best wine until last.”

The England selectors, led by Gubby Allen, stopped by at Shardeloes on their way back from a selection meeting at Edgbaston so it was a very distinguished gathering that took drinks in and in front of the pavilion on a sunlit evening to end a very memorable centenary day. Sadly I had to leave halfway through to get back to Aldershot but it is a match that will live with me forever.
