Wokingham v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 13:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Amersham travelled to Wokingham on a hot and stultifying June Saturday and fought out a competitive draw, in which the Shardeloes team had the upper hand at the end of the day. It was not always thus during the course of the afternoon, however, as Wokingham won the toss and elected to field. Sethpath Kelum, their Sri Lankan quick bowler maintained a challenging line and length during his opening spell and he prevented Amersham getting off to a brisk start. Rob Viney worked hard through this challenging period to score 37 before miscuing. The value of his innings became apparent later as the fact that Amersham had not lost may early wickets allowed the middle order to attack as the Wokingham attack wilted in the mid afternoon heat. This attack was led by captain Luke Jackson whose 60 was full of characteristically swashbuckling shots. He received admirable support from Andy Viney (40) before Richard Stephenson (50*) took the initiative. His innings was perhaps unattractive in parts to the purist it was ultimately satisfying as it took Amersham well past 200.

After tea Alex Lines (3-47) set about the Wokingham top order with gusto. In his 3rd over captain Rocky Soza inside edged a rising delivery into his stumps and Adam England was dismissed next ball, gloving a fine seaming delivery into the safe hands of Rob Viney behind the stumps. The third wicket partnership proved more resilient, however, as Dan Reddyhough (65) and Stuart Hayter (60) put on 110 at an increasingly quick tempo. Reddyhough's first mistake saw him top edge a sweep off Abhay Mayer (1-43) to short fine leg and when Hayter picked out Andy Viney at long off off David Atkinson (2-40) Amersham's persistence and determination was beginning to pay off. The return of Lines for a second spell immediately brought the key wicket, of Simon Myles, caught at cover by Luke Jackson. This marked the end of Wokingham's attempt to win the game, but their tail, shepherded by Thava (18*) resisted the varied attempts of the visitors to bowl them out.

The game ended with Wokingham 50 short of victory, and 8 wickets down. The 14 points Amersham garnered from this game proved enough to take them back to the top of the league. Only two of this week's 5 games reached positive conclusions, and none of the top sides won, leaving 4 sides within 12 points of each other, and less than 40 points covers the whole division. 2010 promises to be a very tight season and every point is likely to be valuable. Next week Amersham entertain another of the top 4 sides in Burnham in what should be an entertaining afternoon at Shardeloes.
