Amersham CC Saturday 1st X1 v Thatcham Town on Sat 27 Aug 2011 at 12:30
Amersham CC Won by 3 wickets

Match report When Amersham hosted already relegated Thatcham Town at Shardeloes there was little to play for, but an entertaining game of cricket ensued none the less. Amersham eventually ran out winners by three wickets, but not until Thatcham's young side had given a very creditable account of themselves. After a wet week the wicket was, unsurprisingly, green and damp and Rob Viney had little hesitation in opting to bowl when he won the toss. however, this did not pay immediate dividends as Jaco Nel and Stuart Rogers both struggled slightly with damp footholds. Ross Schreiber (18) and Josh O'Flynn (82) forged a solid opening partnership that accumulated 36 in an hour before Schreiber was well caught by Chris Cann in the slips off Andy Viney (5-79). Viney bowled 23 overs in a marathon spell, hitting a challenging length and persistently posing questions of the Thatcham batsman. O'Flynn batted aggressively throughout his innings but when he fell, also caught by Cann off Viney, the Thatcham innings began to subside. Viney worked his way through the top order, claiming the first 5 wickets to fall and then Abhay Mayer (4-18) polished off the tail as Thatcham lost their last 6 wickets for 25 runs.

The wickets continued to tumble as Amersham began their chase. An unnecessary run out and a mis-timed pull left the host's innings hanging by a thread at 2-2. Howevre, Joe Shuttle (49) batted extremely sensibly and partnerships with Chris Fleming and Chris Cann (36) rebuilt the innings. However, three wickets fell in quick succession with 58 still to swing the momentum back to Thatcham. One of Amersham's strengths is the batting quality of the lower order and Dan Colquhoun (19*) and Stuart Rogers (39*) were not daunted by the task in hand. They combined aggression and watchfulness and steadily whittled away the target until a booming straight drive from Rogers ensured victory.

The season finishes next week with a trip to Basingstoke, who have a chance of winning the league. Amersham, meanwhile, lie in 4th place only one point short of Kew, who are third.
