Bagshot v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 13:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Amersham visited Bagshot at the weekend for the final game of the first half of the Morrant Thames Valley League season. Luke Jackson again won the toss and chose to bat and, again, Chris Fleming amassed a big score. After an early scare or two he, in company with Andy Viney, took advantage of the small ground and quick outfield to put on an opening partnership of 91. Viney was caught at long off for 39 in the 23rd over, which brought Chris Cann to the wicket. He immediately made an impact, hitting four of his first 7 balls for four and displayed a wide range of shots throughout his innings of 90. He and Fleming added a further 81 before Fleming was caught LBW. His innings of 73 took him past 450 runs in the league this season, already more than any Amersham batsman accumulated in the rain hit season of 2007. Cann moved serenely onwards, apparently untroubled by the Bagshot bowlers. His defence was solid and his timing and power meant that most attacking shots he played with aggressive intent whistled to the boundary. Luke Jackson (12), Chris Owen (15) and Richard Stephenson (14*) supported him towards the end of the innings which closed after 50 overs on 252 for 5.

Opening with the spinners, as is common with Amersham, brought no breakthrough for the second week running as Sohail Maqbool and Chris Hollely built a very sound base for Bagshot. Maqbool eventually fell LBW to Duncan Ward who bowled a very effective spell of left arm swing bowling, picking up 2-33. Bagshot were unable to keep up the necessary pace of scoring after Hollely had been run out for 74. Chris Owen (2-13) kept up his excellent strike rate of a wicket every 4 overs by bowling the obdurate Timms and enticing the dangerous Nick Berridge to hoist a catch to Tom Dixon, prowling on the deep cover boundary. When spin was re-introduced, in the form of David Atkinson (3-48), more success was forthcoming than earlier in the innings. 3 further wickets fell as tight lines and aggressive fielding applied further pressure to Bagshot. However, the Bagshot opening partnership proved to be the defining part of the game, as Amersham's failure to break it early in the game meant there was insufficient time available to take all 10 Bagshot wickets. Nevertheless, Amersham accumulated 14 points from the drawn game, more than enough to maintain their fourth position in the league table. Over the next 3 weeks Amersham play the three teams above them, a run of games that will, surely, go a long way towards defining their season.
