AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Gerrards Cross on Sat 13 Aug 2016 at 11:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 5 runs

Match report Phew, that was close. Amersham held off a spirited fight back from Gerrards Cross to register their 9th consecutive win in Home Counties Premier League Div 2 by just 5 runs.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first the home side got off to a flyer within ex captain Luke Jackson smashing 22 off 17 balls before missing a straight one. With Maduka getting in a mix up and Andy Viney plumb in front Amersham were struggling at 40-3 but a determined stand between Bruce Friderichs (75) and Rob Viney (24) settled the Shardeloes ship with a stand of 60. But without influential all-rounder Rich Stephenson to come in at number 7 wickets fell steadily and it was only thanks to number 10 Matt Chapman that Amersham managed to reach 214. It should have been 250+.

In reply GX were soon in trouble mainly due to youngster Haseeb Ali taking 5 wickets and at 100-7 looked dead and buried. But Jas Grewel (45), Richard Knudsden (29*) and Elliiot Green (32) had other ideas as they battled for victory and a much needed 20 points. They got the target down to just 11 needed off the last over with two wickets left but Haseeb removed Elliot off the second ball and bowling a good line and length GX were left needing 6 off the last ball to level the scores. They only managed a single as Amersham ran out victors by just 5 runs.

This maintains the home side in second spot, two points off the leaders Horspath and just four ahead of Oxford in third place. It's going down to the wire.

Alternative report (Rich Stevenson)

In the first of the four limited overs matches that conclude the Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2 season Amersham and Gerrards Cross couldn't be separated until the final ball of the match, despite their contrasting league positions.

Second placed Amersham won the toss and got off to a flying start with the bat as Luke Jackson attacked immediately. The score had already reached 29 when he was out for 22 off the last ball of the third over. Second from bottom Gerrards Cross then seized control as they took 2 more wickets in the first ten overs. The game calmed down, Bruce Friderichs (75) and Rob Viney (24) building a hundred run partnership which lasted until the 31st over. Viney was first to fall and when Friedrichs was out in the 34th over the Gerrards Cross bowlers dominated the rest of the innings. Denning and Green both ended with 3 wickets from their ten overs, the only real resistance coming from number ten Matt Chapman with 22 runs. Amersham were disappointed at the interval that they had only used 46.5 of they 50 overs and Gerrards Cross knew they had a really good opportunity to move out of the relegation places.

Once again the game continued to swing from side to side as Haseeb Ali took three early wickets with the new ball to reduce Gerrards Cross to 28 for 3. Gradually though they re-built through Hunt (26), Dhaliwal (20), and Denning (45) all contributing to important partnerships. The latter fell in the 40th over with the score on 145 leaving the last 3 batsmen the task of scoring an unlikely 70 runs at more than six an over. But by the time the final over started Knudsen and Green had given their team hope as they needed only 12 to win. Drama followed as Green was caught from the second ball of the over, 5 runs were scored off the other balls and a six was required from the final ball to tie the game. Haseeb Ali held his nerve and even though a single was scored it wasn't enough to stop Amersham extending their run of wins to nine in a row. Much of the credit went to Ali who ended with figures of 5 for 48 from ten overs, his second five wicket haul of the season.

Next week Amersham can help their local rivals when they play third from bottom Thame Town. They will be strengthened by the return of key players, including bowling talisman Alex Lines. Gerrard Cross will hope to perform well again and escape the relegation zone when they entertain Datchet.
