Newbury's main reward for an hour's fielding in persistent drizzly rain was the privilege of watching Richard Stephenson bat. The Amersham 2's skipper showed how to survive against the new ball with some solid defence before reverting to his customary attacking style, giving Chaudhry the charge with a straight driven six and rocking onto the back foot to pull when the Newbury pace man dropped short in reply. Hanabe bowled with more economy at the other end and although the bounce was even, the pitch helped both bowlers beat the bat repeatedly off the seam without creating any chances.

With Piper playing the supporting role Amersham had reached 60 for no wicket after seventeen overs when, in worsening conditions and with the fielder's feet beginning to slide, the umpires called a halt.
