Match report Amersham got their season off to a disappointing start at Shardeloes on Sunday when they were comprehensively knocked out of the Abbot Ale Cup by a West Herts side who were superior in all departments.

West Herts recovered from a sticky start which saw them reduced to 2-38. Hodges and wicketkeeper Griffin put together a match-winning stand of 126, undaunted by the slow wicket or the even slower outfield as they hit the ball to all parts of the ground. Hodges was eventually out to a fine catch by Jon Andrews. Griffin fell to Jeremy Hemmings who picked up three wickets. Mustapha Rajabali was Amersham’s best bowler with 1-16 from his nine overs.

Chasing a total of 222, Amersham began steadily with their reliable opening pair of Rajesh Patel and new captain Jeremy Fisher. But tight bowling and some excellent fielding saw them quickly fall behind the required run rate. Ian Rogers raised the tempo briefly but once he was caught for 27 Amersham were out of contention. Duncan Ward – with a steadfast 19 not out – and Tim Aylott made sure the score reached three figures, before the slow left arm spin of Easterbrook wrapped up proceedings.
