Match report Amersham came through a difficult afternoon at Burnham unscathed on Saturday to remain on course for promotion after a narrow 14-run victory.

Top men for Amersham were Jeremy Fisher, with 42, and Mustapha Rajabali, with 5-32 off 16 overs, five maidens.

Burnham, with something to prove after being bowled out for just 27 the previous week, put up stubborn resistance and came close to causing an upset.

Peter Butler and Jon Atkins gave Amersham a solid start against the pace of West Indian Bryan and the leg spin of Riaz. But a collapse followed from 58-0 to 68-4. Captain Jeremy Fisher stood firm and made a gritty 42 and there were vital contributions from Jon Andrews, Duncan Ward and Sam Martin.

In reply, Burnham made a dreadful start. Martin bowled a fine first over and claimed two wickets – both openers caught in the slips. Tim Aylott took a vital catch to dismiss the dangerous Ramzan for 38 off Rajabali. At 96-7, with 20 overs to go, Amersham looked in command. But the lower middle order kept Burnham in the hunt.

Rajabali’s persistence in tempting the batsmen into false strokes finally paid dividends as Amersham won with three overs to go.
