AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v North Maidenhead on Sat 01 Aug 2009 at 13:30
Match was Abandoned

Match report The day it rained for ever has been, variously, a single by The Eurythmics and Aurora, a 1959 science fiction short story by Ray Bradbury (which was turned into a musical at the Edinburgh Festival) and a book about an 1889 flood in the settlement of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

By 6pm on Saturday it felt as if it is a title that could have applied to events at Shardeloes as Amersham attempted to close the gap on Thatcham at the top of division 1 of the Thames Valley League. 57 overs of cricket were possible in conditions that ranged from damp and overcast to downright unpleasant. All involved-players and umpires-made every effort to complete the game but, eventually, the elements triumphed and the game was abandoned as a draw.

Simon Carter, the visiting captain, won the toss and elected to bat in the best conditions of the day. Jon Stewart (18) & Paul Shaw (32) began in circumspect fashion playing Alex Lines (2-33) and Ducan Ward (1-16) carefully, but punishing anything short which, in the conditions, tended to sit up and ask to be hit. Ward dismissed Stewart courtesy of a thin edge to Rob Viney behind the stumps, but Shaw and Yasin (28) edged the score up to 78-1. David Atkinson (6-8)was introduced into the attack at this point with low expectations given the wet conditions. The ball was taking on water at quite a rate, and becoming rather slippery. However, he slid his second delivery into Shaw's pads to trap him LBW and embarked on a 12 over spell of very tight bowling that undid North Maidenhead's attempt to post a challenging target. Mo Khan and Simon Carter were both dismissed without scoring and Yasin eventually lost patience and was bowled aiming through the leg side. Jon Peachey attempted to score quickly, but was run out by a very slick piece of fielding in the deep by Andy Viney and Alex Lines returned to remove two tailenders. Again, Amersham's attack had again induced a collapse in the opposition as North Maidenhead stumbled from 78-1 to 108 all out.

Unfortunately the weather closed in further after tea and the Amersham innings could not be completed. It was shaping up to be an interesting run chase, however, as two wickets fell in the first over as Chris Fleming and Richard Stephenson were both bowled. Rob Viney was caught behind to leave Amersham reeling at 5-3, but Luke Jackson and Andy Viney first steadied the ship-an appropriate metaphor given the rising water table-and then began to score more quickly. However, after 9 overs the rain came down even more heavily and the umpires-not unreasonably-called proceedings to a halt.
