Chesham v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 4 wickets

Match report Superb pre match preparation contributed to another Amersham win on Saturday as Chesham's score of 233 was overhauled in the last over to consolidate third place in division 1 of the Thames Valley League. Modern sportsmen pay attention to every detail, including nutrition, and the breakfast the team shared could be said to be the amateur version of this.

The key performance in the game was a mature and well paced century from Andy Viney who was unbeaten on 123 when victory was completed. The innings was, as is usual from Andy, watchful and careful to begin with but developed in more expansive fashion as the game unfolded. The opening partnership between Ancy and brother Rob was not broken until the 22nd over, with the score on 101 when Rob was caught in the deep. Four more wickets fell in the next 10 overs, giving Chesham clear sight of victory, but Viney found a staunch partner in Abhay Mayer (34) who, as last week, played a valuable innings as Amersham closed in on victory. Their partnership of 77 came at brisk rate as both batsmen ran aggressively and hit several big boundaries, including a vast Savoir Faire maximum over long off by Viney. Mayer fell with 16 needed off 3 overs and Hugh Jackson finished the job with consecutive boundaries in the last over. Viney, however, was the hero and deserved the post match plaudits for a genuinely substantial innings.

Earlier in the afternoon Chesham had posted a large opening partnership of their own, of 109 between Bradman Ediriweera and Mark Saunders. Amersham's seamers found no joy in their opening spells and it took a spell of four wickets in six overs from David Atkinson (5-77) & Abhay Mayer (1-42) to bring Amersham back into the game. The dismissal of Bradman Ediriweera for 84, well caught by Mayer at backward point, by Alex Lines, returning for a second spell was crucial. The Chesham tail wagged effectively, but wickets fell regularly as well, and the final wicket, a run out, completed the innings off the final ball.

The final game of the league season takes place on Saturday, when 3rd placed Amersham entertain 4th placed Kew at Shardeloes. Amersham 2nd XI will be at Chesham in a crucial game, the winner of which guarantees promotion.
