Wooburn Narkovians v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 24 Jul 2010 at 13:30

Match report Wooburn Narks just held on for a draw following a much improved performance by Amersham 2's. The pace of McKay and the guile of Marsh could not remove numbers 6 and 10 but Amersham were on top throughout the game
Choosing to bat first Weston and Matthews both failed for the first time this season as Wooburn started confidently with MA Tennant, in particular, once again demonstrating he could succeed at a much higher level. These two early losses brought together two players who have played little club cricket this season and, over the next two hours, highlighted how much we have missed them.
Olly Haddock (95) and Hugh Coles (46) played circumspectly from the outset but both grew in confidence as the Wooburn skipper rotated his bowling options. Haddock played some lovely shots through the covers and was particularly strong square of the wicket whilst showing good inventiveness to work the fielders. Coles was more reserved but attacked when required to ensure the scoreboard ticked over and the strike was rotated. Both played incredibly sensibly and took the Amersham score to 150 before Coles holed out to the off spin of M Tennant. Tilbury and Matthews both fell cheaply before Emsley supported Haddock ably taking him close to his well deserved century. The returning Tennant denied the second Amersham century of the season but some strong hitting from Marsh and Emsley took the Amersham score past the magical 200 figure, Amersham ending their innings on 221 having used their full quota of overs
At last the skipper could attack and he duly opted for the old ball with the guile of Rajabali being complimented by the pace of McKay. The former soon accounted for Small, expertly caught by Matthews at mid-on, whilst the latter was too quick for Barker.
Rajabali continued to work his magic from one end whilst Marsh was introduced to replace McKay being saved for later. The two spinners worked in perfect tandem together pressurising the batters, supported well by good ground fielding and safe catching. The Matthews/Rajabali combination made two further dismissals whilst good catching from Marsh (accounting for the dangerous Williams) and Ash meant that at drinks Wooburn were 84 for 5 and staring down the barrel.
Unfortunately, MA Tennant was back to haunt Amersham and as he shut up shop, supported well by Hall and later his brother A Tennant, Amersham had to work a lot harder for their wickets. The new ball focussed the Wooburn minds but it wasn't until Tilbury came on that the breakthrough was made with 8 overs to go. Marsh returned and took his second wicket (just what he deserved) meaning Amersham had 4 overs to complete the victory but sensible batting meant Amersham were denied.
A good confidence boost in advance of a must win game next week
