AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 v Itinerants on Sun 25 Jul 2010 at 14:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 runs

Match report On a muggy day Amersham entertained the Itinerants in what proved to be an enthralling encounter and a fantastic game of cricket for all. There were many hangovers from the previous night outing to Vodka Revs which added to the excitement that was to follow. Inzi won the toss and opted to bat first sending in Rob Viney and Chris Owen. Amersham got off to a perfect start and were scoring at 6 an over with Rob peppering various parts of the ground as Jack and Stuart Rogers found early conditions difficult. Jack found his line and trapped Rob LBW, although if you ask him he was certain he hit it, not the first dubious LBW during the game!!!! Hugh Jackson joined Chris and between them set about upping the run rate after some comments by a certain Renny Adams who said that 94 off 20 overs wasn't going to be enough. Hugh retorted that we should see what happens at the end of the innings and duly began to take about the bowling until a fantastic catch deep on the long boundary put paid to a wonderful innings. Inzi came and went rather quickly as he was given not out to a ball that was plumb LBW and given out the very next ball which he middled, justice some would say! With Amersham needing to post a difficult total it was left to Chris Owen and Ben Matthews to finish the innings off in style, although that was left to a certain Alex Lines. Chris fell just short of what would have been a wonderful and deserved century and Hut Thomas was bowled for a duck. Angelo Matthews hit some lovely shots before Jack returned to claim his 4th wicket, clearly showing he is the best bowler in the Rogers household, no offence Ian. 1 over to go Stuart versus Alex and what an over. First ball went into Great Missenden as Alex smashed it nearly over the back pitch. Second ball dot, but the third ball must be the shot of the season a reverse paddle for six which was yorker length, unbelievable. A couple of singles and a final four meant Alex had hit 17 off just 6 balls not a bad strike rate and had destroyed Stuart's bowling figures in the process.

After an exotic tea, Amersham knew that 249 should be enough even with Alex Lines keeping wicket as Inzi had various bowling options available to him. Angelo Matthews and Tom Ayling opened the bowling and bowled well and were very unlucky to not claim a few more wickets. Tom managed to snare Andrews into loose shot to a diving Huw Thomas and Amersham sensed a flurry of wickets. This was not be the case and Will Gray another Amersham turncoat smashed the ball to all sides of the boundary. Inzi turned to the spin of Felix and Spitty, who was only playing until his wife had turned up from her weekend away, boy were we glad she turned up when she did! Felix bowled superbly and got the prized wicket of Fisher as Alex Lines managed to get his 1 stumping of the year! However Will was still smashing the ball to all areas and Robbie Marsh who had bowled brilliantly the day before got smashed for 26 off just 2 overs. Drinks came and the Itinerants were 151 for 2 at drinks, well above the run rate and you could only really see one winner. Luke Jackson replaced Spitty and between himself and Chris Owen wrestled the game back into Amersham's favour. As we were playing 12 a side the Itinerants would have rued their decision to do this has Jackson bowled a superb spell. He managed to take all 3 Rogers wickets a couple of Grays and a partridge in a pear tree as all them seemed to hole out to some secure catching by brother Hugh and Ben Matthews. Will Gray was the danger man and Luke bowled him when victory and a well deserved hundred was in sight. Enter Harry Heslop having turned down an LBW earlier in the day which hit the batsmen full on the toe and not given it out could he be their nemesis? Ian Rogers also turned down an appeal for LBW stating that the reason he hadn't given him out was due to the fact he had never batted with his son...interesting. Nonetheless Heslop having bruised the fingers of the diving Inzi and to calls of what an idiot from the boundary looked certain to snatch the victory. 1.1 overs to go 1 wicket and 6 runs needed and Alex Lines duly obliged with his second stumping of the match and Amersham won by just 6 runs.

A great game of cricket, some entertaining moments and some strange umpiring decisions made for a throughly enjoyable day for all. All that was left was for the customary curry at Rajgate late into the night
