Scorecard

AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Chiswick & Latymer 2 on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 7 wickets

Match report Amersham turn to Ash.

Match of the Day on a Saturday evening can be confusing. Firstly, Grimsby are never featured. This clearly discredits the title of the programme. Secondly, it can be tricky to find the right channel after a few pints. Finally the highlights shown often seem unbelievable given the result of the games. In some ways this match report may leave a similarly lingering sense of confusion when looking at the scorecard.

Focusing on logistics, Chiswick won the toss and decided to bat on a slightly green pitch. The sun was stealthily gaining full strength and Shardloes looked in good nick. Amersham fielded a balanced team. Eleven players of varying ages with an average age close to 30. Clearly no Amersham player is ever average and we had a bi-modal normal distribution with Ben Langley and Joe Shuttle providing a third peak somewhere in the middle. To the action...

Within 12 overs the opening bowlers constructed a scoreboard reading 23 for 6. Ashley Turney (6 for 22) found his rhythm after a couple of overs and bowled beautifully from one end. In one period of five balls he took four wickets. A stunning performance which, with two further wickets when he came back for a second spell, put Amersham in a seemingly very strong position. And here the ramblings about match of the day may begin to make some sense. At the other end Jack Rogers (1 for 45) bowled with pace and control and could easily have taken five wickets himself. Both Jack and Ash looked dangerous with the new ball and showed a significant improvement from their efforts at Farnham.

But still Chiswick looked dangerous. Amrik Bhatia played some magnificent shots and began to look capable of turning the game on his own. At the other end Subarahan played a classy innings to end on 50 not out. Fortunately for Amersham Paresh Somani (3 for 45) once again took wickets often and exerted more pressure with each over he bowled. After the match we found out that Chiswick were befuddled by his mystery ball. This was also confusing to Paresh as he claims not to have one. But, with or without this intrigue, his spell was central once again to a good bowling performance and final total of 141 all out.

For the first time this season Amersham then managed to bat to the standard their bowlers had set. Paul Weston (30) once again showed that his form is improving quickly and contributed fully to an opening stand of 60. At the other end Joe Shuttle had punished any short balls. But once Paul was gone, Joe began to play shots off the front foot as well and rapidly took Amersham to victory. Joe ended on 93 not out, never really looking troubled, and a well deserved early pint could be drunk.

Thanks to Chiswick for the spirit in which they played the game.

Now Amersham have the chance over the next few weeks to take points off the teams above them in the league. Next week we entertain Wycombe Dragons at home who are a place and ten points ahead of us in the table.
