AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 v Stanmore 2nd XI on Sun 22 May 2011 at 2.00pm
AMERSHAM CC Won by 96 runs
Match report
Mid week saw the Amersham Sunday XI players to a large extent moping around and wondering what they would do with a Sunday off: see friends/family? a little light work around the house? spending some quality time with loved ones?
Fortunately Fixtures Secretary Piper worked his magic and a fixture against Stanmore CC Sunday 2nd XI was arranged, to leave all of the above groups neglected once more. On a blustery day, with some overnight rain in evidence, The Pope won the toss and decided to bat anyway.
H Jackson and Shuttle got Amersham off to a rollicking start with the 100 mark being passed in the 14th over, in no small part thanks to Shuttle’s booming maximums. Clearly these are a Sunday theme for Joe, as he clearly feels the need to offer his own canine retrievers to fetch his towering hits. Jackson played nicely, being especially punishing through the offside. Both went in quick succession, caught in the ring. And when Stuart played an absolutely horrific “shot” and was lbw (good decision, that), Amersham had lost 4-30 in a short time.
Fortunately, in the company of Ben Langley, Andy Viney continued to accelerate with some crisp hitting, before he departed. Langley, in the company of Sunday debutant Mastak Musa and finally Rob Viney, who appeared to have had somewhat of an elegance bypass since his Saturday heroics, got Amersham up to 278. Should be plenty.
Stanmore, at one point, were 105 for 0 in reply. However, they had clearly used too many balls getting there, largely due to some good bowling from Alex Tilbury, Seb Copley, Stuart Rogers and Luke Jackson. Seb bowled very well, at good pace and a decent line and length, with a bit of swing, and was unlucky not to pick up more wickets.
Otherwise, the Stanmore innings was noticeable for Mastak nearly bringing off three of the greatest catches of all time – superb efforts; the Official Worst Bowler in the World and the Official Second Worst Bowler in the World bowling in tandem, and finally H Jackson (the above mentioned Offical Second Worst...) picking up 5-22 from his seven overs at the end of the innings – the ICC are looking into charging Jackson with bringing the game into disrepute through the quality of his bowling.
Stanmore ended 180-9 in their 40 overs. See you next week.
