AMERSHAM CC Won by 187 runs

Match report On an extraordinary afternoon at Shardeloes Amersham beat Fleet by 187 runs. After a wet week the wicket inevitably looked likely to offer assistance to any bowling attack and the Fleet captain had no hesitation in asking Amersham to bat first when he won the toss. Fleet came into the game confident after winning 2 of their first 3 games following promotion into Division 1 last season. Chris Fleming and Andy Viney set about building a solid opening partnership. Fleming took the view that the conditions were likely to favour the bowler and so he determined to despatch any delivery that he felt was eligible to the boundary. This tactic served him admirably and he passed his fifty within the hour. Chris Cann replaced Andy Viney when the latter fell for 17 and put on a partnership of 110 with Fleming for the second wicket. Fleming moved to his century freely, although he took advantage of two dropped catches en route. The latter part of his innnings was characterised by some excellent shots straight down the ground as the Fleet bowlers tired. Fleming and Cann ensured that Amersham reached a very competitive total on a pitch that always offered the bowlers something. Fleming eventually fell shortly after reaching three figures, with the score on 177-2. The home side hoped that the middle order would push on from this base to accumulate a daunting total but it was not to be as the Fleet bowlers, particularly Chalkley and Singleton, maintained their discipline and restricted the scoring opportunities of the home batsmen. In hindsight this was a sign of what was to come as Amersham finished on 219 for 7. There is no doubt that this would have been an acceptable score at the outset of the game, but having been 177-1 we might have hoped for more.

However, this soon became academic. Stand in skipper Rob Viney opted to open the bowling with spin from both ends. David Atkinson and Mustapha Rajabali immediately found conditions to their liking as they extracted significant turn and bounce from the drying wicket. Rajabali struck first in classic fashion, having Parker caught at mid on trying to hit the ball into the cornfield. The dangerous Black soon followed, bowled by a Rajabali armball. Another classic dismissal followed as Atkinson hit Reeve on the foot, trapping him plumb LBW. Two more quick wickets for Rajabali, as Ferguson and Talbot tried, but failed, to score quick runs, and a bizarre runout as Gurney lost his bearings after an LBW appeal reduced Fleet to 13-6. The score remained unchanged for 8 overs as Rajabali and Atkinson increased the pressure. An astute change of bowling by Viney brought immediate results at this point as Brad Holt took a wicket with his first ball by bowling the obdurate Downes and when Chris Cann also claimed a wicket in his first over Fleet were 17 for 8. The end was not long in coming as Cann and Holt claimed one more wicket apiece to end the game in some style.

This was an excellent all round performance by Amersham. Both batsmen, bowlers and fielders contributed significantly to the eventual result, but the greatest credit should go, in this author's opinion, to Chris Fleming for his hundred which allowed pressure to be exerted on the opposition throughout the game, pressure which eventually turned into 25 points for Amersham.
