Winchmore Hill (Middx) v AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 on Sun 04 Jul 2010 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 9 runs
Match report
Amersham had travelled to Winchmore Hill, Middlesex for their third Chess Valley League game against the team directly below them in second place. Inzi knew the day would hold some challenges but not as he was approaching the ground when Stuart Rogers had a car accident(which I am informed was not his fault, nor was he hurt, his car however was less then ok with the wheel bearing needing some TLC. We managed to arrange a someone to take the remaining players over to the ground and arrived about 30 minutes late. Hugh Jackson however was nowhere to be seen so at this point we only had 9 players. Inzi was asked what he wanted to do, silly question we were obviously going to bat, they wanted to do the same so we tossed the coin and it came down on heads. Amersham with their depleted numbers were going to have a bat.
Rob Viney opened up with Ben Matthews and after a flurry of boundaries one stopped on Rob and he holed out to midwicket, Hugh still nowhere to be seen meant we had to juggle the order. Enter Ollie Haddock how played an innings winning game and smashed the ball to all parts of the ground, including the nearby cars which he managed to set off the alarm on more than one occasion. Ben Matthews also holed out and Hugh was just arriving which meant Inzi had to go in at 4. After the nose bleed and a few streaky shots he found his eye and hit a couple of lovely textbook shots, before being bowled round his legs with the ball turning of his pads up the hill and hit middle stump. Strange... Hugh Jackson had arrived 2 hours late and a little worse for wear not having any sleep decided it was going to be his day. He upped the run rate and surprising to all scored 67 and with no one able to support Amersham finished their innings on 259 for 9.
The captain decided that we were going to have to go out perform as a unit and win, rather than rely on a big total and tight early bowling to allow the bowling to be passed around the whole team. Alex Lines bowled a brilliant opening 7 overs and was unlucky to only take 2 wickets as the Winchmore Hill batsmen couldn't cope with his pace. Mckay provided able support bowling his 10 overs right through and then decisions had to be made, as we were missing a bowler from Stuart's earlier mishap. Jack Rogers came on at the pavilion end and bowled a mixture of bowling before deciding that he no longer wanted to bowl as he was being dispatched constantly through the on side, as were most of the bowlers. Hugh Jackson decided he would put his hand up after feeling guilty for turning up late and bowled 3 overs of medium pace before turning to spin. Tom Ayling bowled a brilliant spell and took a well deserved wicket and whilst Jackson was bamboozling the opposition and sometimes his own team Winchmore Hill were still within reach of the target with wickets in hand. Alex Lines was then back on to wrestle back the game into Amersham's favour with the promise of Ben and Jerry's if he won us the game. His first over went for 10 and Winchmore Hill only needed 9 with 3 overs remaining. Alex struck with his second and fourth deliveries and Amersham had won by 9 runs. A little too close for comfort.
A big thank you to those that helped us out, the supporters and everyone who fielded superbly, considering we had 10 players it was a great result. Something which quietened the home team who had though that they had already won the game and who were giving Alex Lines some undeserved stick out on the boundary(I never thought I'd say that!).
