Kidmore End v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 01 May 2010 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Amersham defied the weather to record their second victory in three friendly fixtures on Saturday. The picturesque ground at Kidmore End played host to a more typical early season game than last week's against Chesham. A cold breeze, the perpetual threat of rain and a damp ground favoured the bowlers over the batsmen, so long as the fielders could keep warm! Amersham bowled first and the tri of seamers, Alex Lines (2-31), Tom Dixon (1-21) and Andy Viney (3-28) made it very difficult for the Kidmore batsmen to score at all. Early wickets were taken as well, as the batsmen struggled to time their shots on a rather sticky pitch. Tom Sheldon miscued Lines to the safe hands of Andy Viney at extra cover, Jeff Sheldon edged Andy Viney to brother Rob behind the stumps while Ian Cuthbertson and Joe Waldron both miscued drives. With the score at 60-5 with 15 overs to go Amersham were comfortably on top, but Paul Harper took the attack to the bowling, scoring 81. He took advantage of a short boundary on one side and was quick to pick up anything short of a length. He propelled the home side to a competitive total of 159 off 40 overs.
The Amersham reply began calmly enough, with the Viney brothers both reaching 16 before falling to a misjudged pull and a direct hit run out. The second of these dismissals was quickly followed by two more wickets, leaving Amersham precariously poised at 63-4. Jonathon Fowler (23) and James Dolleymore (20) brought adhesive resilience (Fowler) and rumbustious strokeplay (Dolleymore) to the crease, but two more quick wickets with the score on 86 swung the balance back in favour of the home side. Fowler found an ally in Abhay Mayer (17), freshly returned from his stint in the IPL, and then in Tom Dixon (20*), freshly returned from the London Marathon and together they brought the target within reach. The coup de grace was applied this week by Alex Lines (17*), freshly returned, in flip flops, from the sunnier climes of Sydney who bludgeoned a six and a four in the penultimate over to reach the target. Next week the more serious business of league cricket begins as the 1st XI host Maidenhead and Bray at Shardeloes.
