AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Maidenhead & Bray on Sat 08 May 2010 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 82 runs

Match report Amersham (253-5) beat Maidenhead and Bray (171 all out) by 82 runs in the Morrant Thames Valley League division 1.

Amersham began their league campaign with a victory over Maidenhead and Bray which looks, at face value, comfortable in its margin. Reality was rather different, however, as the visitors had only lost 7 wickets with a mere 8 balls remaining. The game appeared to be heading for a tame draw when the Maidenhead batsmen turned for a third run in an attempt to reach 175 & earn a batting point. They reckoned without the power and accuracy of Chris Cann's arm as he arrowed a throw from the third man boundary into Rob Viney's gloves. Viney hardly had to move to run out the batsman, whose replacement at the crease was trapped LBW by Luke Jackson off the very next ball. This let Suresh Chaudhary to face the final over. He had resisted doggedly for some time, but feathered an outside edge to the wicketkeeper off the third ball of the final over, triggering scenes of some considerable rejoicing.

This excitement distracted all concerned from the bitter cold & brisk winds that had made the game difficult at best, and downright unpleasant at worst. Having lost the toss Amersham were, predictably, asked to bat first as Maidenhead sought to take advantage of the considerable amount of moisture in the ground and the atmosphere. They were ably resisted by the opening partnership of Rob Viney (108*)and Chris Owen (44) who first blunted and then started to impose themselves on the bowling. Owen was yorked immediately after the drinks break, but an opening partnership of 93 was the perfect foundation for the next phase of the game.

Acceleration was provided by Dan Colquhoun (77) who took a few moments to size up the opposition and the ground before proceeding to hit one out of the other. 2 of his 4 sixes carried the boundary by a distance, and he threaded 7 fours between the retreating fielders. His innings came off only 55 balls and took the game away from Maidenhead. Viney, meanwhile, proceeded serenely on his way to three figures, taking on the role of aggressor once Colquhoun was dismissed. His innings included 14 fours and the declaration followed shortly after he reached 100.

On a placid wicket early breakthroughs were crucial to an Amersham win and came courtesy of Stuart Rogers, making his 1st team league debut. He bowled consistently good line and length and took the first 5 wickets to fall to return figures of 5-30. He was aided by good catching behind the wicket and the ground fielding from Amersham was of a pleasing standard, especially given the conditions. A good partnership between Arjan and Faisal Chaudhary mixed watchful defence and measured aggression, especially against the change bowling, but Luke Jackson's off breaks persuaded Arjan to chip to midwicket before Chaudhary miscued the returning Rogers to mid off. At 121-5 Maidenhead's chances of victory were slim, but their tail batted sensibly for 15 overs before the drama of the last 8 balls.

This win marks a very good start to the league season for Amersham, and they will make the 50 mile journey to Basingstoke next week in good heart.
