Match report BAsingstoke & North Hants CC 123 all out
Amersham 124-5
Amersham won by 5 wickets in the Morrant Thames Valley League Division 1

Amersham made the 50 mile journey to Basingstoke on Saturday and returned to the Chilterns with a convincing win and 20 points. The defining moments of the game were delivered by Andy Viney who hit the winning runs, and who had earlier decimated the Basingstoke middle order with a spell of highly effective fast-medium bowling.

Skipper Luke Jackson had no hesitation in asking Basingstoke to bat first on winning the toss. This decision paid immediate dividends when the first ball of the match, delivered by Alex Lines (3-31), caught Lee Nurse on the crease and dismissed him leg before wicket. This immediately passed the initiative to Amersham and, by and large, they clung onto it for the rest of the game. Stuart Rogers (1-21) kept tight control with the new ball from the other end and dismissed Danny Coombs clean bowled, but Russel Droy (38) and Mike Williamson (21) rebuilt for Basingstoke with a 3rd wicket partnership of 50.

The breaking of this partnership was the key moment in the match. Andy Viney (5-45) nipped a delivery through Droy's off drive and sent his off stump cartwheeling towards Abhay Mayer at first slip, with the score on 71. 20 minutes later the score had advanced by only 7 runs, but 5 more wickets had fallen, 4 of them to the irresistible Viney. Talkative South African Fulton failed to play a shot to a delivery that nipped back to catch him lbw and good catching by Rob Viney, Hugh Jackson & Chris Cann completed the 5 wicket haul. At the other end David Atkinson (1-23) kept things tight with a succession of dots, and chipped in with the wicket of Williamson before Alex Lines returned to mop up the tailenders.

Dismissing Basingstoke, relegated from the Home Counties Premier League last season, for 123 was a fine achievement, but the Amersham batsmen had to work hard to win the game in the face of some good seam bowling. Chris Owen (11) and Rob Viney (33) blunted the danger of the new ball before Dan Colquhoun seized the initiative with a quickfire 35, including 8 boundaries. His partnership with Viney brought the score to 91, but 4 quick wickets fell to penetrative seam bowling, leaving Andy Viney and Chris Cann to see Amersham home to their second victory of the season.
