AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Burnham on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Amersham (176-7) lost to Burnham (179-7) in the Morrant Thames Valley League division 1.
Amersham lost their first game of the season on Saturday in a close fought encounter with Burnham which swung both ways several times before a fine innings of 68* from Burnham captain Mo Fazal swung the result decisively in the visitor's favour.
Having lost the toss Amersham were asked to bat first and were immediately in trouble. Wickets fell in the 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th overs to leave Amersham precariously placed at 8-4. Fazal did most of the damage with some astute swing bowling, taking 3-10 in his opening 8 over spell. Rebuilding was clearly essential and Luke Jackson (25) and Andy Viney (28) did the job effectively, before Jackson perished trying to accelerate. Richard Stephenson (16) continued the good work but when he and Viney were dismissed in quick succession with the score still in the 80s an embarrassingly early finish was still on the cards. However, Abhay Mayer (31*) and Stuart Rogers (56*) were not prepared to be thus embarrassed and fashioned a partnership of 94 for the 8th wicket. Rogers, in particular, played some excellent shots down the ground and a final total of 176-7 was riches indeed given the parlous position the side faced earlier in the afternoon.
One impact of this recovery was to tilt the momentum in the game towards Amersham and this continued into the early overs of the Burnham innings. Stuart Rogers (2-26) and Alex Lines (1-50) both claimed wickets within the first 15 balls. Lines' wicket was thanks to an exceptional catch by Dan Colquhoun, taken running backwards and sideways at mid on. Aftab Khan, batting at 3 for Burnham claimed some momentum back for his side, however. His innings of 49 dominated the next phase of the game since his partners were rendered almost scoreless by tight spin bowling from Abhay Mayer (3-39) and David Atkinson (1-47). Mayer bowled Khan to make the score 67-5 and the game was swinging back in Amersham's favour. Fazal, however, had other ideas, and his mixture of watchful defence and a willingness to punish anything wayward saw his team home.
Next week Amersham make the short journey to High Wycombe and will hope to return to winning ways at the scene of their Bucks Cup triumph last season.
