AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Basingstoke & North Hants on Sat 17 Jul 2010 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Amersham (205-9) beat Basingstoke and North Hants (204-6) by 1 wicket.
Amersham secured an improbably victory on Saturday when Basingstoke visited Shardeloes. A partnership of 104 for the 8th wicket between Stuart Rogers (71) and Dan Colquhoun (61*) was the largest partnership in the game by 31 runs and the largest in the Amersham innings by over 70 runs. Coming together at 94-7, they were not parted until Amersham were only 7 runs from victory, on 198-8, but there were still nervy moments as another wicket fell with the score on 202 before Dan Colquhoun hit the winning runs.
Rogers' innings deserves a paragraph of its own. Having forced his way into the team as an opening bowler he is now carving a niche as an all rounder. This is his second 50 of the season, following 56 against Burnham, but this innings was much more impressive and far more valuable since it was scored under the pressure of the run chase. After taking an over or so the size up the situation he hit 24 off the next 5 balls he faced and the momentum turned towards Amersham. His innings proceeded in similar vein throughout, with periods of watchfulness interspersed with onslaughts whenever the bowlers were kind enough to deliver the ball in the right place. They did this regularly enough for Rogers to race past his partner, Colquhoun, no slouch himself, who suffered the unusual indignity of having the field brought in when he faced. Rogers hit 4 sixes and 8 fours-all either straight down the ground or through the leg side and some of them were hit as cleanly and hard as anyone could hope to strike the cricket ball. While Rogers raced to a 30 ball half century Colquhoun's innings was one of the finest he has played for Amersham. Coming in at the perilous position of 37-4 he batted through the next 169 runs and 30 overs for his unbeaten 61. Innings of this kind win games and his level headed determination was invaluable. Better known for his destructive hitting he left the fireworks to Rogers and ensured that the onslaught was turned into victory.
Once Rogers fell, unsurprisingly caught on the boundary, with 7 needed the game continued to enthrall the spectator. Alex Lines looped his first ball through backward point for 4 and then fell to a superb diving catch at mid off from a shot that would have reached the boundary had it not been caught. David Atkinson survived the remaining four balls of the over before being dropped at midwicket in the next over. Colquhoun, however, remained calm and victory was secured.
Earlier in the day Basingstoke's batsmen had batted senisbly to post a total in excess of 200. Russell Droy (38) and Ben Foxley (43) accumulated an opening partnership of 73 and both looked accomplished and effective players. They fell in quick succession, Foxley mistiming Abhay Mayer (1-49) to the safe hands of Chris Cann at midwicket and Droy falling to an excellent reflex catch at slip by Chris Owen off David Atkinson (4-36). The Basingstoke middle order found quick runs harder to come by, especially off Atkinson who removed Giles LBW and the bowled Coombs (21) as he tried to accelerate. Williamson (41) accelerated well until caught on the boundary, leaving Rouse (35*) to take the visitors past 200.
This was one of the more exciting games of cricket your correspondent has played in; one in which the balance swung one way and the other. Both sides fielded very well-11 of the 15 wickets fell to catches and one more to a direct hit run out-and the drama of the last hour of the game was quite special.
