AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Wokingham on Sat 07 Aug 2010 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 34 runs
Match report
Amersham went top of Division 1 of the Thames Valley League on Saturday after beating Wokingham at Shardeloes. An excellent game of cricket featured two centuries, one half century and two 5 wicket hauls. Having won the toss, Wokingham elected to bowl first, and their opening attack of Kelum (5-67) and Myles (2-52) made a good start as Rob Viney and Chris Fleming fell cheaply. This brought Chris Cann (106) and Chris Owen (51) together and they forged a third wicket partnership of well over 100. Cann’s innings was particularly fine as he manoeuvred the ball around the field effectively and accelerated as the innings drew to a close. The middle order supported him well, with Dan Colquhoun’s 38 adding impetus. 242 was always going to be a competitive score, but Wokingham had showed resilience and skill with the bat in the first fixture this summer, so there was no room for complacency.
Their innings got off to an extraordinary start. Amersham opted to open the bowling with spinners David Atkinson (2-38) and Abhay Mayer (6-60). This strategy often takes time out of the game through building pressure and slowing the scoring rate. On Saturday, however, the 4th ball of the game disappeared for 6 and after 3 overs the Wokingham score stood at 12-3. Mayer claimed two wickets in his first over, pinning opposition skipper Soza lbw and seeing Thava caught by Alex Lines on the deep square leg boundary attempting to get off the mark with a 6. In the next over Dan Colquhoun ran back to catch Dan Reddyhough at mid on off Atkinson as he attempted to clear the ropes again. This brought Simon Myles to the wicket and the assembled players and spectators were treated to one of the best innings you could hope to see at this level. He utterly dominated the next 90 minutes of the game, appearing to hit boundaries at will, and negotiating the strike so that he faced the vast majority of the bowling. With a shot for every occasion and every style of bowling it was a joy to watch, even for those trying to get him out! He seemed to be taking Wokingham serenely to victory until he picked out Stuart Rogers on the boundary at deep fine leg with a sweep off Mayer that was perfectly timed and sweetly struck. Had he placed it 5 yards either side it would have added 6 more to his total. His dismissal triggered a flurry of middle order wickets as Atkinson and, particularly, Mayer reduced Wokingham to 165-8. Mayer’s 6 wicket haul took him to 30 league wickets for the season which is an excellent total with 4 games to go, and his valuable runs at number 7b have made him a key part of Amersham’s success this year. Resistance from the Wokingham tail who, to their credit, continued to seek every opportunity to score runs, was ended by the return of Alex Lines (2-29) who picked up deserved wickets having bowled a fine spell earlier in the game.
News from other games later in the evening brought tidings that Burnham, previously top, had lost to bottom side Maidenhead & Bray, meaning that Amersham replaced them at the top of the table. Inevitably, next week Amersham visit Burnham in an extremely important game for both sides.
