AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v High Wycombe 2 on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
Amersham fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of High Wycombe 2nd XI at Shardeloes on Saturday, in a closely fought game. Having lost the toss Amersham were asked to bat first and got off to a brisk start as Rob Viney (41) & Chris Owen (23) put on 62 for the first wicket in good time. Viney scored particularly quickly and hit 7 boundaries in a fluent innings, that was ended when he edged a ball into his stumps. Chris Fleming (39) continued the quick scoring rate, timing the ball sweetly even after pulling a hamstring spectacularly. In the middle of the innings High Wycombe hit back and took three wickets for the addition of 25 runs, but Luke Jackson (54*) lent the end of the innings some impetus.
211 was a reasonable, but not daunting, total, which High Wycombe approached, initially, in a cautious manner. Amersham opened with spin, hoping for an early breakthrough. Luke Jackson (2-58) acheived that, but Jon Stevens (77) batted doggedly throughout the early part of the innings and built a platform for the innings. A third wicket partnership between Stevens and Dulieu (37) of 73 brought Wycombe to within 60 of their target, but then Alex Lines (5-52) bowled a superb spell of fast medium from the Pavilion End. He removed the Wycombe middle order and, along with a run out excellently engineered by Chris Cann and a superb catch in the deep by Richard Stephenson, Wycombe were left needing 24 with only two wickets remaining. However, Wilson & Russell survived a few scares to cross the line.
Amersham accumulated 14 points from this defeat, leaving them only 3 points behind leaders Burnham. Hence there is still all to play for as Amersham visit Cove on Saturday in the penultimate game of the season.
