Cove v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 28 Aug 2010 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Amersham (250-4) beat Cove (246-3) by 6 wickets.
Amersham recorded perhaps their most impressive win of the season away at Cove on Saturday. A week of wet & cool weather meant that the wicket looked as if scoring runs would be a potentially tricky exercise, but that turned out to be illusory as nearly 500 runs were scored for the loss of only 7 wickets all afternoon.
The highlight of the afternoon, at least from an Amersham point of view, was an opening partnership of 132 between Rob Viney (53, including his 500th league run of the season) and Abhay Mayer (105) as Amersham set off in pursuit of a victory total of 247 off 48 overs. Viney and Mayer showed aggresive intent from the very first ball and their partnership was put together at a rate of nearly 7 an over. Mayer played some exquisite drives, especially through and over extra cover, while Viney scored many of his runs off his legs, through square leg and midwicket. Both ran between the wickets well and the impetus their partnership gave Amersham would last the duration of the innings. Rob Viney eventually fell caught at extra cover off the persevering Dilawar, and was replaced at the wicket by his younger brother Andy (56*). Initially he batted circumspectly and allowed Mayer to continue taking the attack to Cove, but gradually accelerated as victory approached. He played several very sweet flicks into the leg side and reached his half century with a powerful on drive for 6. Shortly after this Amersham cruised past the victory target with nearly 8 overs to spare. This batting performance was probably Amersham's best of the season as the top three completely dominated the opposition's efforts.
Given the ease with which the batsmen cruised past the target it might be argued that the Amersham bowlers did a better job in the first half of the game than it initially appeared. Cove got off to a solid start through Read (107*) and Randall (19), but scored at only 3 runs an over for the first 25 overs or so. Randall fell LBW to Atkinson (1-51), erroneously playing for turn that didn't exist, but Read gradually accelerated through the innings. De Sousa showed aggressive intent from his very first ball and it was no surprise when he skied a catch to Chris Cann of Abhay Mayer (1-42). Marisa continued to push the scoring along before he too skied a catch, this time to Rob Viney behind the stumps (his 19th catch of the league season) off Alex Lines (1-53). This brought Reagan Mclean (brother of former West Indian opening bowler Nixon) to the wicket, and his innings fired Cove to their competitive total. His 18 ball unbeaten 45 included 4 sixes and 3 fours. One of the sixes was as big a six as you could hope to see, clearing the boundary, a high fence and two detached houses before landing 150 yards closer to the M3 than it started. Stuart Rogers, the unfortunate bowler, along with the rest of the Amersham side, could only stand and admire.
However, such fireworks were ultimately in vain as the sustained excellence of the Amersham top order made light work of the challenging total set by Cove.
This result leaves Amersham in second place in the league. Burnham are 8 points ahead, so there is still all to play for next weekend when Kew visit Amersham.
