AMERSHAM CC Lost By 7 wickets

Match report Amersham stuffed by confident Chalfont
An inglorious start on an incredibly cold, wet and windy day in Chalfont saw Amersham 2's lose to their local neighbours
On losing the toss Amersham were duly asked to bat on a green, damp yet hard track and the new partnership of young and old started competently. Weston and B Matthews coped well with the often overstepping Chalfont openers and began to build a very useful opening partnership. Weston showed great levels of introspection and concentration, often lacking last season, whilst Matthews, recovering well from jet lag showed some real flashes of inspiration, especially through the mid wicket area. The running between the wickets was good and the initial noise from the chalfont fielders soon subsided as the opening pair passed 50. Disaster struck in the 22nd over though with Weston finally listening to the demons inside and going for the big shot and holing out to mid-wicket.
Matthews soon followed afterwards with a maiden England 50 in sight to an LBW decision allowing Dolleymore and Cowley to rebuild. From 80-0, Amersham lost top order wickets at regular intervals to the accurate Din and Khan allowing Chalfont to wrestle back the initiative and, as the innings moved into the final 12 overs, the score was a disappointing 129-5.
Enter Emsley (with his strap on) and Colquhoun. These two injected purpose, thoughtful running and some not incosiderable hits to move the score towards respectability. If we had been offered 183 having been inserted i think most ACC players would have taken it.
Ward and Colquhoun opened the bowling and immediately caused the Chalfont top order problems. Colquhoun, unaccustomed but not out of place, bowled a steady line whilst Ward was imemdiately on the money but with little luck.
The first league wicket of the season went to Ward but all credit has to go to Dolleymore. If a better catch is taken this year it will have to be a good one.
A middled square cut flew to gully where Dolleymore dived to his left like a spawning salmon and held the catch one handed (on his weaker side) well behind him.
Unfortunatley with the wicket and outfield drying, and a less nagging line, the Chalfont batters were able to move the total on apace. Replacing Colquhoun, Emsley, and then Matthews (A) were unable to remove the leg sided Haniff or off sided Ahmed as runs came easily. Aided by some early season sloppy fielding and a couple of sharp chances being put down, Amersham had no real answers.
A glimmer of inspiration came from the two spinners, operating at the opposite ends of their careers. Rajabali, after a couple of looseners, began to tie one end up whilst, Matthews (B) when he was finally called up, showed some real promise (warmer fingers in the season will help).
Matthews removed Haniff with a turning ball whilst the new man Maghul was snared by Rajabali
Unfortunatley this was too little too late as Chalfont strolled to victory, led by the impressive Ahmed (73*), with over 5 overs to spare
The scoreline suggests more of a beating than we took but plenty to work on.
