Harrow v AMERSHAM CC Sunday 1st X1 on Sun 11 Jul 2010 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 7 wickets

Match report Jubilant from their nail-biting win in the league over Winchmore Hill the previous week, a strong Amersham side travelled to Harrow for a hastily-arranged friendly. Faced with the prospect of a warm day and a wicket that looked very flat, skipper Viney promptly lost the toss, and unsurprisingly the home side opted to bat.

Stuart Rogers showed how much he appreciated that decision by removing the Harrow opener’s middle and off stumps with the third ball of the match – unfortunately he neglected to keep his foot behind the popping crease, and although he was to make up for this oversight in the very next over, it was unfortunately in only half as spectacular fashion. After good opening spells from Stuart and Andy Lines, the Matthews brothers, Jack Rogers and Abhay did a good job of keeping Harrow in check, despite the flat wicket, some quality batting and strong hitting. Lynes returned to finish the innings with a couple of wickets and Harrow were 202/9 at the break. Special mention to Dan Colquhoun, who despite having one of those days where every ball seemed intended to reach him in an awkward place, fielded superbly in the firing line straight down the ground. Pick of the bowlers was Stuart with 3 for, who bowled with genuine pace and good control, troubling all the batsmen – I won’t elaborate further, reader, as I suspect you’ll soon hear all about it…
Chris Owen and Abhay began the Amersham reply and their contrasting styles proved successful, with the flamboyant Mayer immediately taking a liking to the pace on the ball with some crisply struck cover drives. When he fell in the thirties, he was replaced by Colquhoun who contributed 20 more and fell lbw just when Harrow’s long off and cover fielders were beginning to consider demanding danger money to field any more crunched drives. Meanwhile, Chris Owen was slowly beginning to dominate the bowlers, and proceeded to a wonderfully measured hundred via a flurry to strong drives through extra cover and innovative flicks to leg, exploiting the gaps in the field. He was not out at the end with 104, having anchored a textbook chase and with Jackson and finally Ben Matthews hanging around to support in applying the coup de grace.
So, a dominant performance going into next weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with Harefield at Shardeloes in the Chess Valley League, which promises to be a game full of quality cricket. If Amersham continue in this form, they will be a tough proposition to beat.
