Match report There's close and there's close..............and then there's the U17 Plate quarter-final between Amersham and Taplow!

Batting first Taplow made a steady start, 23 for 1, 81 for 2 before losing four wickets on 108. Clearly Nelson was three short in the leafy village of Taplow but the wickets were more down to another brilliant run out by Jack Rogers, three wickets in four balls all bowled from Will Gray and three more from Callum Tilbury. They finished on a respectable 138 for 8.

In reply after losing two cheapish wickets Ben Matthews and Will hit some aggressive shots before getting out with the score still under 100. Taplow chipped away at our wickets and we chipped away at the runs and we were 128 for 7 at the start of the last over, eleven to win, with Jack and Callum at the crease. A two, a single, a leg bye, a full toss whizzes past Callum's nose, no ball not called and then Callum misses a slower ball. But Tom Ayling's not worried taking a single off his first ball. Six needed off the last with skipper Jack Rogers facing. A wide, five needed off the last ball. A big hook, will the fielders stop it? No, it's a one bounce four.

Despair in the Amersham camp, we haven't won. But wait, the scores are level, who lost the least wickets, both teams lost eight. So what happens next? A replay, toss of the coin maybe? The coach calls the organiser who doesn't know either but will call back with a ruling. A five minute wait seems like five hours and then the phone rings..........rule 7c states that if the scores and wickets are level then the winner is the team with the highest score after 7 overs and if equal after 8, then 9 etc etc. The score book is opened slowly to see Taplow had scored 39 from their 7. That's pretty good, turn the page with eyes shut, what were Amersham on? From memory we hadn't started that well..............it's 44! We win.
