AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Harefield on Sat 16 Apr 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Amersham got the 2011 season off to a winning start with an ultimately comfortable victory over Harefield on Saturday. Both sides were taking their first tentative steps into the new season, but the Amersham side was pleasingly lacking in early spring rust.
On a pleasant afternoon Harefield batted first on a good looking wicket. The opening pair of Simon Macey and evergreen Richard Mcleod settled quickly and put on 53 before the first wicket fell. Macey mistimed a drive and was taken by Paul Weston at midoff off Andy Viney. Jack Rogers bowled well for Amersham throughout his opening spell, nipping the ball off the seam and was rewarded when McLeod edged to slip. 13 more runs had been added before Viney struck again, removing former Zimbabwe international Nkala and Ollie Richards with consecutive balls, leaving Harefield teetering on 66-4. Matt Lench (25) rebuilt the innings, with support from Luc Baldwin (27), but all the Amersham bowlers bowled well. Abhay Mayer picked up 2 wickets and Luke Jackson 3 as the Harefield innings came to an end. A flourish from Dale Morris (23) pushed the run rate above 4 an over, but the Amersham batsmen were in confident mood at tea time.
This confidence appeared slightly misplaced when the scoreboard showed 21-3 after 11 overs, however. Doug King (3-20) removed Abhay Mayer, Hugh Jackson & Dan Colquhoun for low scores, but Rob Viney (28) batted grittily through the opening overs. When he was dismissed with the score on 66 Paul Weston (55*) joined Luke Jackson (64*) and this pair took Amersham to victory with a stand of 104. Weston punished anything overpitched with well timed drives, and Jackson hit the ball into the gaps effectively.
All in all, this was a good performance from Amersham, who visit Chesham this Saturday.
