Match report Amersham began their league campaign with a disappointing draw away at High Wycombe. Choosing to bowl first, Jack Rogers (1-22) and Jaco Nel (3-37) combined to produce a challenging opening 15 overs that yielded only 38 runs, and included one wicket, when Rogers celebrated his 18th birthday by bowled Curzon Thompson. Matt Lance (89) and Ali Birkby (24) then put together a partnership of 75 in 23 overs. Sadly, the Amersham fielding aided the Wycombe cause rather than abetting it, as a succession of chances went begging until Rob Viney held a thin edge from Birkby off Nel. By this point spin had been introduced into the Amersham attack, and David Atkinson (4-47) bowled tightly from one end. As Wycombe accelerated wickets began to fall, as Atkinson had Javed caught at mid off and Nel finally dismissed Lance. Nel then beat Morgan for pace and, unable to keep out of the game, held a phenomenal one handed catch on the long on boundary off Atkinson to dismiss Keith Newell. Finally, Atkinson clean bowled Allen and Wilson as they attempted to score through the legside. 189 seemed a reasonable but not too daunting score, but the missed chances early in the innings came back to haunt Amersham.

Wycombe opened with their spinners, and Ali Birkby (3-46) soon removed Rob Viney leg before wicket. Abhay Mayer (30) batted positively but Robin Collins (4-68) and Birkby reduced Amersham to 42-4. Luke Jackson (35) rebuilt the innings in collaboration with Dan Colquhoun (14) and Andy Viney (17). Jaco Nel then hit 20 off 24 balls to keep Amersham in the game, but his dismissal saw the Amersham tail shut up shop. Tom Dixon and David Atkinson successfully negotiated the final 5 overs and the game ended in a draw.

Next week Cove visit Shardeloes for the side's first home game off the season, when Amersham will be hoping to hang on to a higher proportion of the chances offered in the field!
