AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Cove on Sat 14 May 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 9 runs
Match report
Cove (185 all out) beat Amersham (176 all out) by 9 runs in the Thames Valley League division 1.
Amersham fell to a narrow defeat when Cove visited Shardeloes on Saturday. Cove batted first and set off briskly, with former Hampshire professional Chris Benham to the fore. His 88 was an excellent innings, and ultimately proved a key difference between the sides. Scored off 97 balls, with shots all round the wicket, his part in the 2nd wicket partnership of 113 with Simon Reed (42) was the only time in the game that the bat dominated the ball. When Reed was dismissed, caught and bowled by Luke Jackson (2-37) the Cove innings crumbled. Andy Viney (2-25) picked up two wickets in quick succession, Benham was taken in the deep courtesy of a stunning catch by Joe Shuttle and Jaco Nel (4-53) ran through the tail.
Cove's total of 185 provided a good opportunity for Amersham to win, but an excellent bowling display from the visitors meant that opportunity was not taken. Rob Viney (84*) anchored the Amersham innings, showing discipline, timing and considerable skill in overcoming the challenges posed. Throughout the run chase the game swung to and fro. At 63-2 all seemed well, but at 76-4 Cove were in a position of strength. Andy Short (4-41) and Vinny de Souza (3-34) were the main wicket takers, while Joe Shuttle (24) and Will Gray (20 on his debut) provided resilience and valuable support for Viney. However, the tail could not match that support and Amersham fell agonisingly short of the victory target.
