Finchampstead v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 21 May 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 3 wkts
Match report
Amersham recorded their first win the the Morrant Thames Valley League division 1 on Saturday with a close fought and exciting three wicket win over Finchampstead. The long journey to Finchampstead was rewarded with a very good game of cricket, with some fine individual performances, culminating in a dramatic conclusion.
Finchampstead skipper Matt Jones elected to bat first having won the toss, perhaps having observed Amersham's poor start to the season. However, the retun to the side of Stuart Rogers (2-31) gave the bowling attack fresh impetus and he provided a good foil for Jaco Nel. Nel beat the experienced bats of Russell Lane and Gary Loveday on several occasions during his opening spell without reward, and Rogers induced a false shot from Lane, who miscued into the safe hands of Chris Fleming at mid on. Shortly after Jones flicked Rogers straight to Hugh Jackson at square leg, leaving Finch 36-2 after 12 overs. Loveday is a hugely experience cricketer, however, and managed the Finchampstead innings admirably. Although Andy Viney (2-39) had Isaacs caught at the wicket Loveday (127*) found support from Dan Lincoln (23) in a 4th wicket partnership of 64. Throughout the middle overs of the Finchampstead innings the Amersham bowling and fielding was tight, not allowing the batsmen to dominate on a flat pitch that offered little assistance to the bowlers. David Atkinson (2-59) dismissed Lincoln and Tom Ansell LBW, ensuring the game remained close, before a 7th wicket partnership of 80 between Loveday and Sam Taylor (27) took Finch to a competitive total. By this time Loveday was batting aggressively, accelerating past his century with a flurry of boundaries. 227 seemed a fair total, but not daunting, given the placid nature of the pitch.
The Viney brothers, Andy and Rob opened the batting for Amersham, facing Finchampstead's spinners as they attempted to take time out of the game quickly, and increase the run rate the visitors required. Rob Viney (93) carried on where he left off last week, seemingly untroubled by any of the bowling. His 93 anchored the Amersham innings, and as a consequence victory was always possible. He received good support from Chris Fleming who showed his class in his 31, ended only by an excellent reflex catch by Matt Harper off his own bowling. at 176-3 Amersham seemed well set for victory, but a flurry of 3 wickets for the addition of only 2 runs shifted the impetus back to Finchampstead and left the visitors needing 10 an over off the last 5 overs with two new batsmen at the crease.
However, those two new batsmen were Dan Colquhoun (29*) and Stuart Rogers (20) and they proceeded to despatch the Finchampstead bowling to all corners of the picturesque ground. Rogers hit 20 off 10 balls, including a sumptuous cover drive which raced to the boundary and a straight 6 before being bowled with 8 balls remaining and 11 runs required. Incoming batsman Hugh Jackson did the right thing in ensuring that Colquhoun had the strike for 5 balls of the last over, although in the event only 2 of them were required, such was the quality of his striking. The first ball was smashed back past the bowler for four, while the next soared over the fielder at deep midwicket and the boundary he as protecting. Colquhoun's 29 came off 11 balls, with just the 9 scoring shots. Two straight drives were hit for 4 with such power that long on and long off had now hope of cutting them off, while a nonchalant flick flew over square leg onto the second ground. Rogers and Colquhoun plundered 14, 13, 9 and 11 off 4 consecutive overs, making light work of the final hurdles.
Amersham have now drawn one, lost one and won one and look forward to the visit of Fleet next weekend with renewed confidence.
