Match report Amersham (84-10) lost to Fleet (102-10) by 18 runs in the Morrant Thames Valley League division 1.

Amersham came down to earth with a bump after their win against Finchampstead, as they lost to Fleet by 18 runs at a blustery Shardeloes. In a game where the ball dominated the Fleet pair of slow left arm spinners won the game with some disciplined and effective bowling throughout.

The largest partnership of the match was the first, between Black and Griffiths, Fleet's experienced opening pair. They put on 40 before Black steered Andy Viney (2-21) into the safe (and vast) hands of Jaco Nel in the covers. Next ball Viney rearranged Garvey's off stump and the theme of ball dominating bat was established. Amersham turned to spin soon after and Abhay Mayer (5-16) and David Atkinson (2-12) worked their way through the remaining Fleet batsmen. Mayer was particularly impressive, taking two sharp caught and bowled chances and keeping a very tidy line and length throughout. When Will Gray ran out the final Fleet batsman all seemed well for Amersham.

This snese of wellbeing did not last long, however. Phil Singleton (4-34 off 21 overs) is a known quantity in local league cricket, but his partner, 17 year old Howard Bywater (6-48) was a new face. Together the applied considerable pressure to the Amersham batsmen and Bywater dismissed three of the home top order in quick succession, leaving Amersham perilously poised on 21-4. Things did not improve much as time went on, with only Luke Jackson resisting with an innings of 41, comfortably the highest score of the game. He found some support from Stuart Rogers (13) and Amersham inched closer to the victory target, but eventually Jackson fell and the game was lost.
