Kew v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 04 Jun 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Amersham (235-3) beat Kew (234-8) by 7 wickets in the Morrant Thames Valley League
Amersham travelled to Kew Green on a hot and sultry afternoon and recorded a convincing 7 wicket victory. Rob Viney was again the star of the show as his unbeaten 101 provided the backbone of a successful chase of Kew's total of 234. The older Viney has now scored 290 runs in 5 league innings, averaging a shade under 100, thanks to two unbeaten large scores. His excellent hundred was perfectly judged, having ensured that Amersham did not lose early wickets he accelerated through the middle part of the innings, and finised the game with a flourish. He scored all round the wicket, but was particularly strong through the covers and off his legs. His hundred was brought up with two coruscating off side shots which flew away over the parched outfield. The Amersham innings had begun steadily with an opening partnership between Rob Viney and his younger brother Andy (14). The pair successfully negotiated Kew's decision to open the bowling with their spinners, Andy Yaxley (1-66) and Ash Baig (0-39) and were beginning to accelerate when the younger Viney fell LBW to Yaxley. Chris Fleming (56) upped the tempo briskly during his stay at the crease, hitting several boundaries during his innings before being bowled by Nathan Pearce trying to force another delivery through the legside field. Chris Cann fell immediately, but Luke Jackson batted with positive intent from his first ball, which he drove fluently through the offside towards the hothouses of neighbouring Kew Gardens. By this point Viney was fully into his stride, coping admirably with the heat, despite having kept wicket for 52 overs before batting. Kew tried a variety of strategies with their bowling attack, but none could keep the batsmen quiet enough to apply significant pressure, and the required run rate gradually came down from around 7 an over to a very manageable 5 an over until victory was achieved with 2 overs to go.
Earlier in the day this seemed an unlikely conclusion as Kew set off at a very brisk pace. Amersham were delighted when Stuart Rogers (1-30) bowled the perennially dangerous Bruce Friderichs for 4 in the second over, but his opening partner Ian Maynard (45) and Nathan Pearce (42) scored quickly as the home side raced to 80 off 12 overs. It took a good catch by Chris Fleming at mid off to remove Maynard, off Tom Dixon (2-34) to break the partnership. Dixon bowled very tidily and his control of line and length slowed the run rate considerably. He was assisted in this by David Atkinson (1-47), who bowled 15 overs at a cost of 3 an over. This allowed Amersham to gain some control over the game, while a 5th wicket partnership between Rob Maier (38) and Ed Knowles (46) developed. As Kew attempted to push the score up towards 250 these two fell to Abhay Mayer (4-54) who picked up two further wickets as the Kew tail was exposed. This good work by the bowlers laid the foundations for Rob Viney's matchwinning innings, and was, overall, a strong performance from Amersham.
