Match report Amersham (236-7) drew with Henley 2nd XI (202-8) in the Morrant Thames Valley League.

Amersham ventured to pastures new at the Brakspear ground in Henley to play newly promoted Henley 2nd XI on Saturday. The well appointed ground with a new clubhouse was a very pleasant destination and the men from Buckinghamshire came away with a good haul of points from a drawn game. Losing the toss and being asked to bat first was not a bad outcome on a flat looking pitch, although two quick wickets did little to ease early nerves. However, Rob Viney (55) continued on his relentless progress with his fourth half century of the season. He received admirable support in rebuilding the innings from 5-2 from Joe Shuttle, whose 38 included a couple of delightful straight sixes. All the Amersham batting order contributed, and the run rate accelerated courtesy of some fine strokeplay from Luke Jackson (28), Abhay Mayer (22) and Stuart Rogers (27). The final acceleration came from Hugh Jackson, whose unbeaten 32 included a pair of corsucating cover drives that surgically bisected the boundary fielders, and Jaco Nel (22 of 16 ball) who opted for the less subtle approach of crashing the ball to, or preferably over, the boundary. The relative ease with which incoming batsmen became established was testament to the quality of the pitch, and Henley's decent bowling prevented Amersham getting a truly daunting score.

After tea and an erroneous flirtation with an all spin opening attack that saw the score race to 44 off 6 overs Jaco Nel (2-45) and Stuart Rogers (3-33) bowled a superb spell of swing bowling. Nel sent Hilditch's (17) middle stump cartwheeling, while Rogers enticed the attacking Chris Ellison (35) to nick an outswinger to Rob Viney. A direct hit runout from Abhay Mayer and a second wicket in the space of 5 balls from Rogers changed the game as Henley collapsed to 55-4, whcih soon became 64-5 when Nel added another scalp, also caught behind by Rob Viney. Resilient partnerships of 33 and 23 then rebuilt the Henley innings and the game was shaping up nicely when rain, which had been threatening for some time, finally fell. 8 overs remained but the dampness of the ground after the interruption, and the loss of momentum by both sides, meant that the end of the game was something of an anticlimax. Amersham claimed one more wicket when Atkinson bowled Wheeler, and Henley passed 200 as Darren White (77*) hit the same bowler for 20 off the final over, and the game ended in a draw.
