Thatcham Town v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Amersham visited Thatcham on Saturday and came away with a convincing 7 wicket win. Damp weather overnight had left Thatcham's ground damp underfoot and the wicket initially slow. Captain Luke Jackson won an important toss and elected to bowl first. Stuart Rogers (1-33) and Jaco Nel (1-40) immediately put the Thatcham openers under pressure, bowling good line and length. Scott Gibson and Josh O'Flynn found runs hard to come by but defended diligently, until a change of bowling bought a breakthrough. In a moment of all round poor cricket Gibson mistimed a pull shot designed to despatch a long hop from Jack Rogers (1-13) straight to Jaco Nel at mid off, who nearly dropped it. This was the first ball of Rogers' spell and the remaining 6.5 overs were excellent, as he maintained great discipline to concede less than two runs an over, and he thoroughly deserved a wicket. Thatcham made slow progress in the first half of their innings, and had scored at 2 an over until the 2nd wicket fell with the score on 44. Another bowling change saw David Atkinson find O'Flynn's edge with his second ball and Rob Viney took the catch behind the stumps. This brought Ali Naqvi (85) to the crease and this old adversary made batting look considerably easier. In partnership with Dan Stone (55) he set about setting a target for Amersham by accelerating almost immediately. His runs came off 78 balls and he was not dismissed until the final over when Stuart Rogers bowled him. Stone had fallen to a Jaco Nel bouncer, which he edged through to the keeper, while Abhay Mayer (1-39) accounted for the dangerous Steve Wyatt.
A total of 201 was not daunting, but a good start would be crucial and that was provided by Abhay Mayer (40) and Rob Viney (84*). Mayer provided early impetus, attacking the spin of Chris Bird, and punishing anything overpitched from Ali Naqvi. His 40 came from 50 balls and when he was caught behind with the score on 82 Amersham were well on their way. Andy Viney fell cheaply, but the match was won by a partnership of 74 between Rob Viney and Chris Cann. It was Cann's first major innings of the season and he rapidly found good form, taking the opportunity to attack anything of imperfect length. His 46 ball half century brought Amersham to within 25 of victory but the real batting hero of this game was the excellent Rob Viney.
This innings was his 4th score in excess of 80 in 8 games, and the 3rd time in 8 games he has batted right through the Amersham innings. His judgement about what to play and what to leave was impeccable and his driving through the offside imperious. Two consecutive driven boundaries were sent gliding over the turf with apparently minimal effort and his positive attitude throughout his innings was the key element in this victory.
Amersham lie 5th in league, 10 points behind Basingstoke who visit Shardeloes next week.
