Match report Amersham fell to their third defeat of the season when Basingstoke made the long journey from Hampshire to Shardeloes on Saturday. On a slow but true wicket the game was evenly poised throughout, until a decisive spell of bowling from 17 year old Matt King saw the visitors to victory.

Earlier in the day a third wicket partnership of 77 between captin Russell Droy (57) and Dan coombs (40) had been the foundation of the visitor's innings after Jaco Nel (5-56) and Stuart Rogers 2-42) had claimed an early wicket each. However, Amersham fought back strongly as 4 quick wickets fell after drinks, 3 to Nel and 1 to Abhay Mayer (2-63). From then on wickets and runs were traded evenly until the Basingstoke innings closed on 219-9. Nel recorded his first 5 wicket haul in the league, bowling with impressive pace and stamina throughout.

After Rob Viney's dismissal in the first over Abhay Mayer (20) and Chris Fleing (34) batted positively to see Amersham race to 45 of only 8 overs. The dismissal of Mayer brought Chris Cann (86*) to the crease and his innings held the Amersham reply together. Unfortunately much of the middle order was undone by canny seam bowling from Mark James (4-80), but valuable support was forthcoming from Stuart Rogers (14) and Jaco Nel (14). Cann's partnership with Nel took Amersham from 136-8 to 190-8 and victory was a distinct possibility. However, King (4-50) produced three ideal deliveries to dismiss the tail.

Halfway through the season Amersham lie midway up the table having won 4 games out of 9, and will be aiming to record more victories in the second half of the season to cement a high league placing.
