AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 v Finchampstead on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 4 runs
Match report
Amersham emerged victorious from a thriller against Finchampstead on Saturday at Shardeloes.
Put into bat, the home team started sedately against some good FInchampstead bowling, especially from left-armer S Hards and reached 59 for the loss of 2 wickets at the half way point, led by Rob Viney (24) and Joe Shuttle (25). A couple of quick wickets left Amersham at 63 for 4 from which the Jackson brothers Luke (39) and Hugh rebuilt with a stand of 40. Another flurry of wickets, largely due to the impressive bowling of JJ Kean, left Amersham at 130 for 8 and in trouble. A highly impressive cameo of 26 from Andy Viney led Amersham through to 176 all out in what would turn out to be a crucial period at the end of the Amersham innings.
With a moderate total to defend Amersham had to start well and they did so, with Stuart Rogers (1-22) dismissing the dangerous Russell Lane in the second over and opening partner Jaco Nel seeing off another two of the Finchampstead batsmen before the score had reached 25. Bell and Gary Loveday build again for the visitors with a stand of 69 before Bell fell to a superb delivery from Andy Viney (3-45) who continued to pick up wickets at the score mounted. With Jaco Nel (5-43) continuing with a high-quality spell of swing bowling at pace from one end, including picking up the crucial wicket of Loveday, Amersham found themselves favourites once more at 130 for 8. A stand of 42 between Appiah and Hards brought Finchampstead to the brink. Just when it appeared that the game was lost for Amersham, Abhay Mayer took a brilliant caught and bowled chance to dismiss Appiah and Nel deservedly picked up the last wicket of the valiant Hands to leave the home side the victors by 4 runs in a high-quality, intense game of cricket which was played in excellent spirit.
Amersham visit Fleet this weekend and will look to avenge their defeat earlier in the season and continue to boost their position in Thames Valley Division 1.
