Basingstoke & North Hants v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 1st X1 on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at 12:30
AMERSHAM CC Won by 2 wickets

Match report Amersham concluded their 2011 league campaign with a thrilling two wicket win over championship chasing Basingstoke. After the long journey to the first class May's Bounty ground returing captain Luke Jackson won the toss and chose to bowl first, giving Basingstoke the chance to earn the 25 points they needed to stand a chance of winning the league, but also maximising Amersham's chance of a win and the highest possible league finish. 6 hours later that victory was achieved in dramatic circumstances. Chasing 198 to win, Amersham were well placed at 158-3 thanks to a well crafted 51 from Rob Viney, an aggressive 32 from newly wed Chris Cann and Andy Viney's 53. However, some excellent spin bowling from Basingstoke's Nilesh Raja (4-29) brought a flurry of wickets as Basingstoke's hopes of victory and promotion were suddenly reignited. Andy Viney continued fluently as the wickets fell, however, and the victory target remained in sight. He was dismissed-extremely well caught by Russell Droy-with 12 still needed and 8 balls remaining. Enter Jaco Nel, Amersham's excellent South African. Having combined the roles of cutting edge and workhorse of the bowling attack he chose the final game of the season to make his mark with the bat. The final over was to be bowled by Martin James, Basingstoke's talented seam bowler. Having already taken more than 50 wickets this season he summoned the energy to bowl the final over of the season with a great deal riding on it. Nel had other ideas, however, and sent the second ball spiralling over deep midwicket for an enormous 6. The third ball flew hard and fast over James' head and crashed into the sightscreen to seal the victory.

Earlier in the day the Amersham bowlers and fielders had made a good job of restricting Basingstoke to an achievable total. A good team effort saw all 6 bowlers used claim a wicket. Tom Dixon (2-26) had both openers caught behind by Rob Viney before Basingtoke's attacking middle order fell cheaply. Former England under 19 wicket keeper was clean bowled by Stuart Rogers (1-23), while Guyanese youth international Delon Heyliger was LBW to David Atkinson (1-26) in consecutive overs. Basingstoke captain Russell Droy anchored the innings with 41 before pulling Nel to Hugh Jackson at midwicket. Aggressive batting from Dean Nurse (36) and Chris Froud (36) moved the home team towards 200, but excellent outfielding and tight bowling from Nel and Andy Viney (1-40) at the end of the innings kept them below that landmark, allowing Nel to seal victory in fine style at the season's end.
