AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Chesham 2 on Sat 23 Apr 2011 at 13:30
Match was Drawn
Match report
Amersham hung on for a draw with the assistance of some (im)partial umpiring against a strong Chesham team in their opening match of the season.
The day started with most of the Amersham team meeting each other for the first time. This was rapidly followed by the captain being locked out of the changing room when he lost the toss.
As expected, on a track more suited to late summer, Chesham started well reaching 50 in the 12th over and the hundred came up in the 24th for the loss of only one wicket. Both openers batted well, especially B. O'Donllan who deserved the 81 he finished on. Mo Asif and Graham Rance then kept scoring quickly, leading to Chesham posting a big total of 242. All the Amersham bowlers got the opportunity to have a first bowl outside and the level of concentration and enthusiasm in the field was maintained really well. Highlights in the field were Michael Viney and Will Gray taking their first wickets in the 2nd team. Oli Lansdowne posted a good set of figures and Ashley Turney bowled a good second spell.
Sadly none of the Amersham top six could go on to post a big score. Most maturity was shown by Will Gray (43) and Rob Lloyd (32) who played themselves in before playing the bigger shots. Your correspondent was impressed by their patience and obvious promise. The same could be said of Duncan Ward (33 not out) but at least one of the adjectives used in the previous sentence would be misplaced. As the menacing thunder storm stubbornly refused to arrive on time, the lower order hung on to claim the draw. Chesham relied heavily on the leg spin from C Royals who bowled 17 tidy overs and deserved his figures of 4 for 66.
In summary all the Amersham players, except those with broken backs or wicketkeeping gloves, had an opportunity with the bat and ball. The bowling attacks were evenly matched but the strength of the Chesham batting was decisive in this encounter.
