AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Chesham 2 on Sat 21 May 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by two wickets
Match report
Amersham faced Chesham in the knowledge they needed to perform better than last week, and also knowing Chesham were significantly stronger in the pre-season friendly. Chesham came into the game on the back of wins in their first two league games.
Chesham won the toss and decided to bat. Despite good opening spells from Jack Rogers (3 for 24 from 11.3) and David McKay (1 for 12 off 6) Chesham reached 60 for 1 from 19 overs. Then a good period of pressure resulted in three quick wickets, two of which were manufactured through good fielding from Will Gray. From then on David Sidebottom (0 for 26 off 7) and Paresh Somani (3 for 22 from 7) kept control and wickets fell regularly. A rapid and angry Jack came back to clean up the tail and Amersham needed 114 to win.
When tea was taken after 45 minutes of the Amersham innings, victory seemed a distant prospect. At this stage Amersham were 31 for 5. Only Alex Tilbury (20) had looked in control. Ben Langley (4) then batted with determination and Paresh Somani was unlucky to be given out caught behind. But then the match winning partnership arrived with an almost fatally injured Rich Stephenson (64 not out) and a less angry Jack Rogers (1 not out) keeping the bowlers out. Jack looked comfortable throughout and fortunately kept the big shots for next week, Rich managed the strike and victory eventually came in the 40th of the 62 available overs.
In summary Amersham were excellent in the field and appalling with the bat. Chesham could also make a similar statement and should consider themselves unfortunate to lose this game.
