Match report Happy new year, bleuuuugh!

Amersham arrived at Farnham in their glad rags after the great escape against Chesham the week before. The canapes went well with the toss being lost and Farnham deciding to have first go an already sticky dance floor. Loveable uncle Paul Weston and glamourous friend of a friend Hugh Coles entertained us with rude jokes and witty anecdotes during the early stages. After sizing up their audience the smiles became even wider as Hugh (86) played nicely to get to fifty then really cut loose. Farnham knocked over four glasses of red during this time but despite this Hugh played a smashing innings. At the other end uncle Paul (44) found his stride after a couple of glasses of the house red. As at all good parties those who arrived fashionably late added to the energy in the room. David Sidebottom (20), Ben Langley (21), Duncan Ward (19*) and Nick Piper (11*) all made some pretty shapes. And Amersham were able to move onto the desert 4 overs early.

The festivities continued as David showed off his party tricks (2 for 6 off 7), aided by Paresh Somani with his illusions (3 for 35 off 11), taking early wickets. The well liked neighbours, Tadman (19) and Khan (19), batted sensibly to stabilise the Farnham innings. Unfortunately it was then that time in the evening when gatecrashers arrived. Malik (57) and Mellish (19) flirted and swaggered and the assembled revellers were losing their smiles. But second wind arrived as a few wickets fell and the fielders were beginning to ask how long until Big Ben could be heard. Unfortunately the sensible Wilcox (6) and S. Mellish (13) decided this was the time to get the hoover out and begin washing the used glasses. Clearly this killed the atmosphere and sprightly Coles disappeared off to a better party down the road. Farnham held on for a rugged draw and wrote their resolutions whilst looking forward to days to come. Amersham set off home grumbling about how New Years eve is always a let down and maybe it would be far simpler to invite a few friends around for a good meal, rather than paying far too much to go to a sweaty, swanky venue.
