Chesham 2 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Won by 6 wickets

Match report After a run of poor performances, Amersham 2nds completed a morale-boosting victory over local rivals Chesham on Saturday with a comprehensive 6 wicket win. Rich Stephenson, on his last outing before fleeing the badger cull for a couple of weeks, won an important toss and had little hesitation in asking Chesham to bat on a track of two ends - one hard, one less so.

The Chesham openers somehow managed to survive the opening thrust from Messrs Ward and Mckay, and it was the introduction of Somani that saw them both removed in his first 3 overs. This brought together O'Donovan and Ausuf who set about forging a sound third wicket partnership which even managed to somehow withstand the introduction of Stephenson, who even his mother acknowledges has never bowled better since leaving the family sett. With a challenging total looming on the horizon, Stephenson sought the advise of Frodo & Sam and turned to our own Gandalf Greybeard, formerly known as Rajabali. The prospect of bowling to the suet pudding end seemingly invigorated and inspired the wearer of the greying beard, as he proceeded to rip the heart out of the Chesham batting with a masterly display of very slow bowling aided by some injudicious shot selection and some smart catching. At the other end, Mckay returned to inflict further damage and the Chesham innings closed at 174 all out. Special mention must be made of a brilliant runout effected by Michael ( call me Jonty ) Viney which restored his confidence after an earlier abberation and allowed the Amersham team to take tea in good humour.

In a change to the scheduled programming, Stephenson shuffled his pack and sent out the hitherto untried pairing of A Tilbury and Ben Langley to confront the Chesham opening attack, and both prospered with Tilbury being especially severe on poor Hardy who was dispatched four times over the boundary in quick succession. Batting was being made to look easy and it was only an ill-judged single and resulting runout that ended Tilbury's innings and brought brother Callum ( as opposed to Brother Callum ) to the crease. Wielding something more akin to a small tree than a cricket bat, our aforementioned monk set about the Chesham attack with a sucession of lusty blows and well executed misses in compiling an excellent 50, all the time supported by our Tango drinker whose innings of 35 combined stout defence and well timed drives. Sadly for the crowd, both perished with victory still a little way off and this brought together the vastly experienced middle order pairing of Stephenson and Weston. Whatever hope Chesham may have had at this stage was dashed as both Amersham batsmen combined (relatively with Weston batting) quick singles with a liberal sprinkling of boundaries in a dash to the finish line. Weston perished with victory at hand, and after Mckay resumed where he had left off at OMT, it was fitting that Stephenson should sign off with the finishing runs.

Amersham entertain Farnham next week and will be optimistic of further bolstering the points tally, though Gandalf will be sadly missing as he has decided to accompany Frodo and Bilbo on the journey to Mordor via Dubai.
