AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 v Farnham Common on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 13:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
The literary, Tolkeinish theme of last week has been dispensed with in favour of something more pragmatic. Initial observations from a glorious day at Shardeloes:
1. 242 sometimes isn't enough to defend on a good batting wicket with one seamer at ones disposal.
2. Seemingly insumountable run rates can come down.
3. Trying to prove you are still younger than some of your team doesn't mean a damn thing if you dive and crack a rib or two whilst landing on the ball. It still hurts......an awful lot!
4. There can still be many positives to be taken from a galling defeat.
5. Ben Langley simply doesn't take singles - his first eight scoring shots were all boundaries.
The badger cull meant stand-in skipper Weston was able to win the toss, bat, and at least get things right for half of the game :) The Amersham opening pair of Ben Langley and David Mackintosh (24) were largely untroubled as they sauntered to a 50+ opening partnership, which was rudely curtailed by Ben having the temerity to get out for an increasingly assured 45. James Wood (12) showed Gower-esque languid grace before drilling a cover drive straight to the waiting hands of ....cover. When David Mack attempted to bat entirely out of character by charging down the track to Bassi and skewing a catch, Duncan Ward then brought the biggest cheer of the afternoon by managing to last more than one ball, and seemed set to cash in until playing over a yorker for 17 and the early momentum gained by Amersham seemed in danger of being lost. Messrs Weston (65) and Rogers (60) met in the middle, immediately called a meeting, opted against convening a left-handers convention and instead decided upon rewriting the constition with a well constructed partnership of ...well, must have been nearly 100 - which was completely dominated by the Chairman with the Treasurer largely watching, calculator in hand, with ever-increasing approval. It may have been delayed shock at the thought of possibly having to run three that caused TC ( The Chairman )to miss a straight one and allow daughter Alex to join the party. Party pooper Weston had other ideas, and mindful of Amersham's total humiliation at the hand of the ladies on 22nd July 2011 ( lest anyone forget the date ) promptly ran Alex out and denied afterwards that any money had ever changed hands in the Full Moon ( lest anyone forget who was captain on 22.07.2011). The Amersham innings closed shortly thereafter on a healthy looking 242-7.
Farnham had the previous week won their first match at the 39th time of asking and thus viewed the prospect of chasing 243 to win as a mere bagatelle. Shame was they didn't tell Amersham. All looked ok for Amersham when the combination of veteran pace (evergreen Ward) and youthful guile (deciduous Dale and Cooke ) reduced Farnham to 111-6 in 30 overs. Game over...or possibly not. Messrs Bassi and Wilcox then proceded to put on over 100 at an alarmingly quick rate - and the pressure was well and truly on. Vital catches went down, tempers frayed and the beards of the watching sages were stroked ever faster. Surely not? Oh yes. When Wilcox was smartly c&b by Cooke the sense of relief was palpable, but not for long. Mr Bassi (74 no), who at one stage seemed to belong more in A&E rather than in the MCC, joined forces with Hopwood and with some considerable skill and it must be said a liberal helping of good fortune added 36 for the 8th wicket and saw the visitors home. Defeat did not taste particularly pleasant, but both sides played an equal part in a really good game of cricket which was played in good spirit and this correspondent saw much to take cheer from, especially in the bowling of the young Amersham spinners. We journey South to Chiswick & Latymer next week for what could be a crucially important match in our season. He may be distant but the Dark Lord sees all.......or am I confusing LOTR with Wind in the Willows??
