Chiswick & Latymer v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 06 Aug 2011 at 13:00

Match report
A tale of what might have been perhaps sums up a drawn game against Chiswick & Latymer on Saturday as Amersham returned back to base camp Shardeloes feeling that they perhaps should have won.
The large Twickenham crowd caused a late start and the hosts opted to make first use of a good batting wicket against Jack Rogers and Ashley Turney, something they might perhaps have rued at first as Rogers in particlar bowled a hostile ( his words of course ) opening spell and removed both openers in his first 4 overs. When Turney accounted for Tomar it seemed that Amersham might run through the opposition, but this brought Suleman to the crease who batted really well in compiling a patient 114, aided it has to be said by a couple of benevolent fielders who may have held sharp chances on another day. Mckay combined the outrageous with the extraordinary and opted not to complete a five-for and joined the growing list of the walking wounded by sadly pulling a hamstring - more like jug avoidance if you ask me. However, an al fresco tea was eventually taken ( early supper would perhaps be a more suitable description ) with our brave soldiers feeling relatively confident.
This sense of optimism continued as Ben and Paul Langley launched the counter offensive, with Paul in particular being quick to dispatch anything loose to the boundary and the troops in the trenches were able to relax. When Langley (P) inexplicably missed a straight one to end an opening 50 partnership, Sidey maintained the tempo with a series of sumptuous ( his words ) drives and flicks whilst The Wall quietly accumulated at the other end, and all seemed fine. Then disaster struck. Ben was perhaps unlucky (my words, not his) to be adjudged lbw, Will Gray slapped his first ball to point and Sidey continued the catching practise - from 86-1 to 86-4 in the blimk of an eye and Amersham seemed in trouble. In strode Ian Rogers and together with the fatally wounded Weston a rebuilding exercise got underway. Intent on proving the performance of the previous week was no fluke, the two senior left handers complied another 100+ partnership, notable for a couple of things:
1. The noise level every time Weston attempted to move.
2. Only one 2 was run - though perhaps "run" is not the best way to describe the movement between the wickets.
Despite all the odds, only 59 were required from the last 9 overs when play resumed after a heavy shower and Amersham seemed on course for victory before Rogers played possibly his one and only false shot ( well, one does have to be nice to the Chairman) and was caught for an excellent 66. Alex came to the wicket with total confidence knowing there was no way her skipper could possibly run her out again, and despite all her best efforts the winning line proved to be just out of reach. With three of the top four to play in our closing round of matches, Amersham will be glad to welcome back some fit players for the conclusion of the season.
