AMERSHAM CC U15A Strikers v The Lee on Fri 20 May 2011 at 18:00
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 17 Runs
Match report
The game began with a winning toss and an ensuing election to field. The turbulent Turney opened up with the ever-aggressive Ollie as we cranked up the pressure from the off. Unfortunately the unstoppable force (Turney+Lansdowne) met an immovable object (Jules Swain) who put together a very good innings indeed. Despite this, Ash and Ollie were both unfortunate not to pick up wickets after some very good T20 opening bowling.
Then came on the first change partnership of Hershil and Woody, who both bowled incredibly well to two batsmen very much in form. Hershil followed up nutmegging the opposing batsmen with a ball of complete deceit that just missed the outside edge. At the other end, Woody made himself a nuisance for the batsmen as he bowled somewhat unplayable balls in his first two overs; it was unfortunate in his 2nd two that the batsmen were on the lucky side of some risky strokeplay.
Then came on Lloyd & Lloyd and despite sounding like an accountancy firm, the only numbers they were crunching was the opposition's score. Young Phil bowled extraordinarily well picking up the much needed scalp of one of their openers as he swung the ball inside his bat to bowl him. At the other end Lloyd Senior bowled in stratospheric proportions as he picked up 4 run-stopping wickets on his way to figures of 4-12 off just 18 balls.
The target of 166 was set, and the chase commenced. Ash and Ollie proved too strong for the opposition in the first 7 overs as they took us to 42 without loss. In the 8th over they both saw their end due to very high quality pace bowling. Nonetheless, a brilliant opening 48 partnership.
This brought Woody and Ells to the crease, who both lived on the edge as they carved their way to a brilliant partnership of 61 for the third wicket. Bowcock was at times regal in his strokeplay, whilst Ayling's no nonsense run-crafting was a joy to watch. As the target grew, they became more ambitious and as Ells tried to launch a six, the ball found his inside edge and fell in the 16th. Woody continued to play well, as the Lloyds both fell victim of having lots of runs to get and not much time in which to get them.
Joe then came in and as the end drew nigh he bludgeoned his way towards the target of 167. As it turned out, we required six 6s off the final over. As it turned out Joe managed one, Woody added further but we only made 19.
A loss by 17 runs and our cup-run curtailed. Nevertheless, the team played with heart, ambition and zest and should not keep their heads down after that display. It is worth mentioning, however, that we lost by 17 runs, and conceded 23 more extras than the Lee - fielding needs sharpening up!!
Perhaps it was a day of coulda/shoulda/woulda. But looking at what actually happened it is clear that once again Mr Woody Bowcock was flawless with a vigorous bowling display, matched with an injury-immune swashbuckling batting performance that kept hope alight right until the end. Awarding him with MVP was consensus.
Keep your heads up; onwards to GX on Monday!
